Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. NEW EDITION 1974. A Vg+ hardback copy in a Vg+ jacket. Not price-clipped, annotated, etc. A scarce book, it is profusely illustrated by some colour and mainly b&w photos. Measures approx 26.5 cm by 19 cm. Condition: Slight wavy cockling to top margins (headers) of some pages, slight flecking damage to top of one photo-page. Temporary exposure to humidity can cause this in books, not severe, fortunately. Slight bumping to one top corner. Contents: The aim of the book is to present clearly and accurately the beauty of open-work tsuba arranged by design school and period. (The tsuba is a protective guard placed on Japanese swords between blade and hilt. It stops the opponent's sword causing injuries to the hand. Such was its purely practical function. Since the samurai referred to his sword as his soul, the tsuba also conveyed information about the standing, dignity, family and prowess of the owner, embodying the aesthetics of the warrior class.) Twenty-one major schools of tsuba production are explained in categories from the standpoints of spiritual and military background.
