Item Description: Ragusan Press, Palo Alto, CA, 1977, 1977. (FAVI, Frencseco). Dubrovnik and the American Revolution : Francesco Favi's Letters . Edited with an introduction by Wayne S. Vucinich. Foreword by John C. Miller. (Palo Alto, CA): Ragusan Press, (1977). Pp. (2),iii-xi,(1),1-143,(1). 4to, printed grey card covers with red lettering and borders to front and blank spine. "Francesco Favi was a man of the Eighteenth century Enlightenment, an ardent supporter of the American Revolution and a champion of freedom. He described Benjamin Franklin as 'an old friend of mine' and he often reflected Franklin's views of events in AMerica. During the War of Independence, in the hope of weaking European support of the struggling republic across the Atlantic, British officials and newspapers assiduously spread reports of the imminent dissolution and collapse of the American confederacy. These stories of abrasive conflicts between the states themselves and between the states and the Continental Congress Francesco Favi discounted as British propaganda. [.] In his despatches to his government, Favi undertook the difficult task of sifting rumor and propaganda from fact. [.] 'Although there may be some truth in this,' he observed, 'it is generally thought that these are passing discords and that they will cease when freedom and independence are at stake.' Favie never lost faith in the ultimate victori of the United States. The Americans, he said, were determined to be free, and 'in such a situation one cannot doubt that their independence is assured'." - from the foreword. Spine slightly browned, else vg. Uncommon. 45.00. Bookseller Inventory # 85186
