First Edition. 500 g; 80 pages (not paginated) illustrated throughout with the drawings by the author, with only six pages of text plus 4 pages of introduction. Colour illustrated dustwrapper. Charlie Hammond left England in 1885 at the age of 15 in search of excitement and adventure in the Antipodes. He kept a series of illustrated diaries, or sketch-books, chronicling his escapades in great detail. This book contains a selection from five of those battered volumes, tracing his story from the eve of his departure to his marriage in 1916 by way of a wonderful variety of experiences in Australia and New Zealand. His occupations included those of sheep and arable farmer, artillery men, decorator, photographer, and newspaperman. He finally settled at Belgrave in the Dandenong hills near Melbourne. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Charlie Hammond.
