SIGNED on the 1/2 title pg. by the author. 270p+about the author. history of poland. cold war. warsaw pact. communism. soviet union. ~ This intensely personal account renders the modern history of Poland in intimate terms, binding family legends to a nation's remarkable struggle for freedom against Communist domination. Michael Kaufman arrived in Poland in 1984 when the furor of Solidarity's rise and the shock of its fall were powerfully fresh. To this assignment, he carried the baggage of his own family legend: Since childhood, Kaufman had heard the stories of his father's years in Polish prisons as a pre~World War II Polish Communist. He knew of the arrests, beatings and hunger strikes his father had experienced before he had been expelled from the Communist party. Kaufman smuggled a letter into prison to Adam Michnik, the most articulate champion of Polish resistance to Communist authoritarianism. Fifty years earlier, Michnik's father had shared a cell with Kaufman's father. When months later Michnik was freed in an amnesty, he introduced Kaufman into the many layers of Polish conspiracies. In time, Kaufman met and was befriended by the fugitive workers, the artists, the teachers and the priests who maintained the underground civilization that has forced Poland's rulers into the deepest retreat from Communism undertaken by any Communist state. There are many threads to Mad Dreams, Saving Graces. In Poland, prison still often ennobles, and here are accounts of those who have extended the national cult of heroic defiance into our time. But Kaufman also met the custodians of fading power. He tells of the Communist generals who have taken over a shrinking and weak party sustained mostly by police clinging to their privileges. Mad Dreams, Saving Graces also investigates the conflicts with the church and the dramatic murder of a popular priest by the police. In addition to the lives of heroes and scoundrels, Kaufman fills his story with many ordinary people~students, textile workers, farmers and drunks~who are trying to do the best they can in a system that is reaching the end of its reserves. Finally, here is a fascinating examination~"The Ghosts of Jews" ~which deals with the enormous impact that Jews still have on Polish consciousness even after they have virtually disappeared, most of them murdered by the Nazis.
