Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When historian Alfred Alf Clayton is invited by an academic journal to record his impressions of the Gerald R. Ford Administration (197477), he recalls not the political events of the time but rather a turbulent period of his own sexual past. Alfs highly idiosyncratic contribution to Retrospect consists not only of reams of unbuttoned personal history but also of pages from an unpublished project of the time, a chronicle of the presidency of James Buchanan (185761). The alternating texts mirror each other and tell a story in counterpoint, a frequently hilarious comedy of manners contrasting the erotic etiquette and social dictions of antebellum Washington with those of late-twentieth-century southern New Hampshire. Alfs style is Nabokovian. His obsessions are vintage Updike. When junior college professor Alfred Clayton is asked to record his impressions of the Ford Administration, he recalls a turbulent piece of personal history as well. In a decade of sexual liberation, Clayton was facing a doomed marriage and the passionate beginnings of a futile affair with an unattainable Perfect Wife. But one memory begets another: Clayton's unfinished book on James Buchanan. In John Updike's fifteenth novel, he masterfully alternates between two men, two lives, two American centuries — one Victorian, the other modern — shining an irreverent, witty, and sometimes caustic light on the contrasting views of social fictions and sexual politics. Book First Edition Signed
Softcover. Condition: Fine. First Ballantine Books edition. Trade paperback. About fine with light rubbing. Inscribed by the author to Herb Yellin. Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association, an uncommon edition to find Inscribed.
