Book First Edition
Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing. 846 Pages Indexed. Navy blue cloth boards. This large book is 2 1/4 inches thick, weighs almost 7 lbs. and may incur additional shipping charges to some locations. The hinges appear to be slightly loose compared to a new smaller book however I believe this to be due to the manufacturing process rather than from use as the appearance of the book in general is of one that was never used. Dust jacket has some minor edge wear and 1/4 inch hole at the center of the spine area. No other defects noted. This incredible book, now in one volume, is literally an encyclopedia of American folk art that is of interest to antique dealers, historians, or anyone with an interest in this field. American design is as diverse and fascinating as the many regions of the vast country itself, and as colorful as the rapid development of American history. It ranges from roughhewn frontier functionalism to decorative elegance and the finest craftsmanship, from everyday household objects to exquisite ornamental showpieces. The Index of American Design, a record of American craft traditions from early Colonial times to the close of the nineteenth century, was executed during the 1930s by hundreds of artists from thirty-five states under the Works Progress Administration. It was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken in the arts. Each artist searched a specific area for the finest or most representative examples of American design and then rendered them in watercolor or tempera. Now, almost 3,000 illustrations, including 800 in full color, have been selected from the Index to create this magnificent volume-making most of these plates available in book form for the first time. The author, Clarence P. Hornung, is an acknowledged authority on American design. He begins the story of American crafts with the exciting period of the first settlers, when a primary concern was the building of ships to maintain a lifeline with England. Numerous illustrations of marvelous ship figureheads and imaginative marine decorations of all types bring this era to life. --- From the Dust Jacket flap. There are Five additional Parts: In The Home, Around House and Garden, Woman's World, Children's World, and Across the Nation. Also includes List of State Projects and a Roster of Artists.
