Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Recent scientific advances have placed many traditional philosophical concepts under great stress. In this pathbreaking book, the eminent philosopher Robert Nozick rethinks and transforms the concepts of truth, objectivity, necessity, contingency, consciousness, and ethics. Using an original method, he presents bold new philosophical theories that take account of scientific advances in physics, evolutionary biology, economics, and cognitive neuroscience, and casts current cultural controversies (such as whether all truth is relative and whether ethics is objective) in a wholly new light. Throughout, the book is open to, and engages in, the bold exploration of new philosophical possibilities.Philosophy will never look the same. Truth is embedded in space-time and is relative to it. However, truth is not socially relative among human beings (extraterrestrials are another matter). Objective facts are invariant under specified transformations; objective beliefs are arrived at by a process in which biasing factors do not play a significant role. Necessity's domain is contracted (there are no important metaphysical necessities; water is not necessarily H2O) while the important and useful notion of degrees of contingency is elaborated. Gradations of consciousness (based upon "common registering") yield increasing capacity to fit actions to the world. The originating function of ethics is cooperation to mutual benefit, and evolution has instilled within humans a "normative module": the capacities to learn, internalize, follow norms, and make evaluations. Ethics has normative force because of the connection between ethics and conscious self-awareness. Nozick brings together the book's novel theories to show the extent to which there are objective ethical truths.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD, The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press= SD). The great American philosopher Robert Nozick very rarely signed his books. I think there only six or seven for sale on the Internet. They range in price from $800.00 to (well, why not) $17,500.00. Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy of this title for sale anywhere on the Internet. Invariances was the author's last book, so it's very possible this is the last book he ever signed. It was the renowned sociologist Daniel Bell's book. Bell was a friend and a colleague. The signed inscription is on the second end paper. It reads: 'For Dan and Pearl, With affection and admiration, Bob.' Pearl Kazin, writer, editor and literary critic, was Daniel Bell's wife. Before she met Daniel Bell she was in a romantic relationship with Dylan Thomas. If you Google her name you will see pictures of her with Thomas, also a reference to a book titled 'A Pearl of Great Price: The Love Letters of Dylan Thomas to Pearl Kazin'. Back to the present, the author, Robert Nozick, also flat-signed his full name under his printed name on the title page. AND Dr. Bell left in the book a copy of a letter, a response to this book, that he had written to Robert Nozick. It's dated October 4, 2001 (Nozick died in January 2002). It is written on the stationary of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Daniel Bell, Scholar in Residence. Here are the first two short paragraphs (they are followed by three longer paragraphs) of this very interesting letter: 'Dear Bob: What a pleasure-- to have your book on Invariance, especially on a subject that has been so much of an intellectual thread of my life. You realize that you are now the compleat sociologist. Herbert Spencer, in his The Principles of Sociology, which he took two decades to write, from 1876 to 1896 (you took only seven, like Jacob), sought to demonstrate that all social phenomena conform to invariant laws. But he was clumsy, and a Comtean and did not know or mind his p's and q's.' He goes on to write about Einstein, Dewey, Aristotle, Adler, Maimonides, and God. Also Steve Weinberg and Gary Holton on the mathematics of invariance, Lorenz, and Hilary Putnam (the very, very expensive book cited above is signed and inscribed to Hilary and Ruth Anna Putnam). Daniel Bell had this book in his possession for a decade. He died in 2011. So he must have held it in high regard because he treated it with more care than was typical of him. Both the book and the dust jacket are in excellent condition. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. There really isn't any wear. All six cover edges and four corners are in excellent shape. The silver lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The spine ends look very good. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers are gray. They are perfectly clean and free of any wear. The same thing can be said for all of the pages of the book. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling. There isn't any toning. There isn't any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no writing other than the author's signed inscription and flat-signed signature. The dust jacket is in excellent condition. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. It is very clean. There are no tears. The flaps are very clean as well, free of wear as well. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. From the dust jacket: 'Recent scientific advances have placed many traditional philosophical concepts under great stress. In this path-breaking book, the eminent philosopher Robert Nozick rethinks and transforms the concepts of truth, objectivity, necessity, contingency, consciousness, and ethics.' Against the very objective reality of a letter limit I can say no more. Inscribed by Author(s).
