Preface, Notes, Bibliography, and Index. Edward Alexander McCourt (October 10, 1907 - January 6, 1972) was a Canadian writer. Born in Mullingar, Ireland, McCourt's family emigrated to Kitscoty, Alberta when he was two years old. He was educated at the University of Alberta, becoming a Rhodes Scholar, and earned an MA from Oxford University. Returning to Canada, he worked at Upper Canada College, Queen's University and the University of New Brunswick before joining the faculty of the University of Saskatchewan in 1944. McCourt published five novels-Music at the Close (1947), Home Is the Stranger (1950), The Wooden Sword (1956), Walk Through the Valley (1958) and Fasting Friar (1963). His non-fiction titles included The Canadian West in Fiction (1949), a critical analysis of regional literature from the Canadian Prairies, Revolt in the West (1958), about the North-West Rebellion, and Remembering Butler (1967), a biography of Sir William Butler, as well as works of travel writing. Music at the Close won the Ryerson Fiction Award in 1947, and was republished by the New Canadian Library in 1972. Sir William Butler, a Tepperary Irishman who served in the British Army for nearly half century, was one of infinite variety. Lieutenant General Sir William Francis Butler GCB, PC (Ire) (31 October 1838 - 7 June 1910) was an Irish 19th-century British Army officer, writer, and adventurer. He entered the army as an ensign of the 69th Foot at Fermoy Barracks in 1858, becoming captain in 1872 and major in 1874. He took part with distinction in the Red River expedition (1870-71) and the Ashanti operations of 1873-74 under Wolseley and received the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1874. Butler saw service in Burma and India; he traveled through the Canadian west in the depth of winter and submitted a report on conditions there which led to the founding of the North-West Mounted Police and out of his experiences wrote a classic of travel literature, The Great Lone Land. Subsequently he fought in the Ashanti and Zulu Wars, at Tel-el-Kebir, and on the Nile where he was largely responsible for the organization and direction of the Nile River Flotilla in the desperate gamble to save Gordon. In 1886, he was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. He served as brigadier-general on the staff in Egypt until 1892 when he was promoted to major-general and stationed at Aldershot, subsequent to which he was given command of the South-Eastern District in March 1896. In 1898 he succeeded General William Howley Goodenough as commander-in-chief in South Africa, with the local rank of lieutenant-general. For a short period (December 1898 - February 1899), during the absence of Sir Alfred Milner in England, he acted as high commissioner, and as such, and subsequently in his military capacity, he expressed views on the subject of the probabilities of war which were not approved by the home government; he was consequently ordered home to command the Western District, and held this post until 1905. In June 1906, he was appointed Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath, and in 1909 he was made a member of the Irish Privy Council. He also held the Aldershot Command for a brief period from 1900 to 1901. Sir William Butler was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1900 and continued to serve, finally leaving the King's service in 1905. He had long been known as a descriptive writer, since his publication of The Great Lone Land (1872) and other works and he was the biographer (1899) of Sir George Colley. He had started work on his autobiography a few years before his death but died before it was completed. His youngest daughter, Eileen, Viscountess Gormanston, completed the work and had it published in 1911. A brilliant soldier who hated war, Butler was often a controversial figure, and never more so than when, as Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in South Africa in 1899, he was accused of pro-Boer sympathies and forced to resign. The closing years of his life he devoted in part to efforts, happily successful, to clear his name.
