Maurice Druon (1918 2009) was a French novelist and a member of the Académie Française, of which he served as "Perpetual Secretary" (chairman) between 1985 and 1999. While his scholarly writing earned him a seat at the Académie, Druon is best known for a series of seven historical novels published in the 1950s under the title Les Rois maudits (The Accursed Kings). The novels were adapted for French television in 1972 and again in 2005, starring Jeanne Moreau. Fantasy writer George R. R. Martin stated that the novels had been an inspiration for his fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and for its TV version, Game of Thrones. Martin has called Druon "France's best historical novelist since Alexandre Dumas, père". The Iron King drops you into the maelstrom that is Western Europe in the Middle Ages. King Philip IV of France (also known as "Philip the Handsome" ) has nearly completed his destruction of the Knights Templar organization and his appropriation of their vast fortune. Only one thing remains: how to deal with Jacques de Molay, the Grand Master of the now-defunct group. The king hopes to display his clemency by consigning de Molay and the three other remaining leaders of the group to a dungeon for the rest of their lives but de Molay has other ideas. De Molay denounces the king and his minions in full court leaving the king no other recourse but to sentence de Molay to death. On his pyre, de Molay curses the king and the other architects of his destruction. Almost immediately, his curse seems to begin to bear fruit. Thus begins the fall of House of Capet and sows the seeds of the Hundred Year's War. Druon is a thorough historian, and has served his readership well by providing copious footnotes and explanations. He presents his characters as true creatures of their time and place, exploring their motivations and the constraints their historical position placed upon them. A series to be pondered, savored, and enjoyed simply for its narrative drive and understanding of human nature. Truly a classic of its genre. ; The Accursed Kings; Vol. 1; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 269 pages.
