Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. University of North Carolina Press, 1st edition thus (1998), 1st printing. Softbound book condition: fine. Covers fine with beginnings of curling at right edge of front cover; binding sound; pages, illustrations & photos as new. 466 pages; 9.25 X 6 X 1.25; 1 lb. 14.5 oz. shippint weight. "Poetics" figures in the subtitle of this book, and one of the key elements of any poetry is metaphor. In the 17th century American world, at the very beginning of the Enlightenment, we find the New England colonists' world suffused with metaphor. For a literate person or society, it's as if all text was also hypertext, with each vision of the real world acting as a link to another "other" world. To such a mind infused with such thinking, a mean collection of huts can become "a city on a hill", each season of bad weather, God's judgement or the evil doings of the strange woman next door. This is a fine examination of just how our colonial ancestors thought at the beginning of a more enlightened age.
