Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. FIRST Edition, no other dates listed. A Good volume (No Jacket). Filled with the usual fantastic / fabulous b/w drawings by author. Interior is clean, no markings or writing at all - except for a shadow pencil price on blank front free end-paper. Lower page corners have very shallow creases from careless page turning. Does not detract. Black book boards have worn/bumped corners (rear more so), with two 'stains' to rear book board. White spine title is lightly rubbed. Volumes illustrations trump any exterior blemishes! Priced to reflect condition. Protected in a mylar slip.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition/first printing. Hardcover with dustjacket. Black cloth-covered boards, 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, unpaginated, b/w illustrations. Book very good plus--near fine (modest bump to upper edge of rear board). Dustcover very good plus (not price clipped; mild rubbing and edge wear; three short closed tears, the longest 7/8 inch). One of Steadman's best books. From the Introduction by Hunter S. Thompson: "There's a wild theme in Steadman's drawings: decadence, corruption, immorality. Obscenity in its broadest sense is another hallmark of the things that shock him. I think he sees all of America as a mockery of what it should be. He probably thinks it was doomed from the start. He has that King-George-III notion of America. A bunch of crude upstarts --- couldn't make it work. He works best when you put him in a situation where he's bordering on flipping out. During one of the intermissions [at the Watergate hearings], Ralph leaped up with a beer in his hand and knocked [Senator] Sam Ervin off his feet. When he comes over here and gets involved in these horrible scenes, Steadman has a way of becoming part of the story." (1722RO007).

Ralph Idris Steadman (born 15 May 1936) is a British illustrator best known for his collaboration and friendship with the American writer Hunter S. Thompson. Steadman is renowned for his political and social caricatures, cartoons, and picture books. As well as writing and illustrating his own books and Thompson's, Steadman has worked with writers including Ted Hughes, Adrian Mitchell and Brian Patten, and also illustrated editions of Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island, Animal Farm, the English translation of Flann O'Brien's Gaelic-language classic The Poor Mouth, and most recently, Fahrenheit 451. Hunter Stockton Thompson (1937 2005) was an American journalist and author who founded the gonzo journalism movement. He rose to prominence with the publication of Hell's Angels (1967), a book for which he spent a year living and riding with the Hells Angels motorcycle club to write a first-hand account of their lives and experiences. Author Tom Wolfe has called Thompson the greatest American comic writer of the 20th century. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Edition. A Steadman / Hunter S. Thompson collaboration, inscribed by Thompson. Steadman made this collection of drawings during his peak period of visual commentary on American scenes and cultures. These are both published and previously unpublished works from his Rolling Stone assignments with Hunter S. Thompson (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas; Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, etc), as well as works commissioned on Disneyland, the Kentucky Derby, Dallas, Miami, etc. The introduction is an interview between the editor of the book and Hunter S. Thompson, with whom Steadman collaborated on the books Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. Unpaginated, but about 176 pages. 9-1/8 by 12-1/4 inches. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Signed "HST" and "Hunter" by Thompson, and dated 10/12/79 on the introduction. This copy with a previous owner's bookplate and blindstamp on the front endpapers. The jacket has several tears, a missing a chip from one corner, and a couple of old tape repairs on the back (verso) at the top of the spine. Not the greatest copy, but for some reason this book doesn't turn up often in nicer shape, let alone signed by Hunter S. Thompson.
