At the sight of the torrent of naked armed men everyone fled and hid. There were some few horsemen, naked but with spears, shouting prayers confusedly, each its own way. The children, the usual guides, came to conduct them, and there was not a grown Meccan to be seen. So they began to pass by and kiss the Black Stone, as it were a swarming of bees." Historically Mecca is a sanctuary and a temple, the site of Ka'aba or the House of God. But this peninsula of Arabia was repeatedly subjected to the fury of the globe ~ lava strewn mountains and monsoon rains wreaked havoc and eventually produced an utterly barren land. Only the fiercest and bravest of persons ventured into this land of hope and dread. Mecca is still the forbidden city, one of the last in the world. Only Muslims may enter, others do so at their own risk. With the rise of the prophet Muhammad came the beginning of the Muslim Era. Before him, power and control of Mecca and the keys to Ka' aba shifted from tribe to tribe. Muhammad was determined to unify the tribes into one entity. All of the attributes of the many gods would be absorbed into one god ~ thereby unifying Mecca and its people. This led to the birth of Allah and the Koran. But this was not to be a tranquil unity. Gerald de Gaury illustrates the turbulent and sometimes bloody shifts of power that were to occur in Mecca over the next several hundred years. He examines the events that led Emir Mikhtar to flee from Mecca in 1201, allowing Handala to seize control. de Gaury recreates the scandalous rule of Mubarek, who remained in control for only 5 months. Mubarek was forced to leave Mecca and headed for the Yemen, where he died in 1727. Sherif Abdilla ibn Said then took over the rule of Mecca and kept it for the rest of his life. There is also the two~faced pledge made by Ghalib to Muhammad Ali and his son Tousoun Bey to assist in the war against the Wahhabis. It eventually became clear that Sherif Ghalib's intentions were to play both sides and join the war only when he was certain of the victor. He was attempting to keep Mecca safe from any invasion. In 1838 he was arrested by Ali and Tousoun and branded a traitor. The Rulers of Mecca is a comprehensive summary and analysis of centuries of Meccan history: rulers, families, economic upheaval and prosperity, and the people and events that built Mecca into the sacrosanct land of the Muslims.
