Trade paperback. Condition: Very Good. Text in Spanish. No building has been more anticipated than Frank Gehry's stunning new Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, an industrial city in the Basque country of northern Spain. In a cover story for the New York Times Magazine, Herbert Muschamp wrote of it, "The word is out that miracles still occur", while Sverre Fehn, winner of the 1997 Pritzker Architecture Prize (Gehry received the award in 1989), stated, "This building is fantastic". This book celebrates the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and details the design process that is an intrinsic part of Gehry's revolutionary approach to architecture.Gehry's use of nontraditional materials and his sensitivity to the environments of his buildings are legendary; his method of envisioning a building through semiautomatic drawings and handmade models is little known but provides an immediate entry into his creative process. Here, stunning color photographs of the building and reproductions of Gehry's drawings and models bring to life his greatest achievement to date.Art historian and artist Coosje Van Bruggen, who has collaborated with Gehry on various architectural and art projects, documents the history of the Guggenheim Bilbao from conception through design and construction. With unique access to the architect and his studio, she has uncovered scores of fascinating drawings and working photographs, which are published here for the first time.

Illustrated endpapers. Coosje van Bruggen (June 6, 1942 - January 10, 2009) was a Dutch-born American sculptor, art historian, and critic. She collaborated extensively with her husband, Claes Oldenburg. Van Bruggen studied history of art at the University of Groningen. In Amsterdam she worked with environmental artists like Doug Wheeler, Larry Bell, and the members of the Dutch avant-garde. Until 1976, van Bruggen taught at the Academy for Art and Industries in Enschede. She married Claes Oldenburg, in 1977 and moved to New York the following year. In 1993 she became a United States citizen. She began working with her new husband, sculptor Claes Oldenburg, in 1976. Her first work with Oldenburg came when she helped him install his 41-foot Trowel I on the grounds of the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo. Together Oldenburg and van Bruggen produced three decades of monumental sculpture that van Bruggen would call Large-Scale Projects In 1985 they collaborated on Il Corso del Coltello ("The Course of the Knife"), a performance piece in Venice, Italy, with the architect Frank Gehry, whom van Bruggen had met in 1982 when she was on the selection committee for documenta 7 in Kassel. Van Bruggen was the author of scholarly books and essays on the work of major contemporary artists including Gerhard Richter, John Baldessari, Bruce Nauman, and Hanne Darboven. She also wrote a monograph on architect Frank O. Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Spain. Frank Owen Gehry CC FAIA (né; Goldberg; born February 28, 1929) is a Canadian-born American architect and designer. A number of his buildings, including his private residence in Santa Monica, California, have become world-renowned attractions. His works are considered among the most important of contemporary architecture in the 2010 World Architecture Survey, leading Vanity Fair to call him "the most important architect of our age". He is also the designer of the National Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial. In 1989, Gehry received the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Gehry vaulted to a new level of international acclaim when the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened in Bilbao, Spain. The museum became famous for its striking yet aesthetically pleasing design and its positive economic effect on the city. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, and located in Bilbao, in Basque Country, Spain. The museum was inaugurated on 18 October 1997 by King Juan Carlos I of Spain, with an exhibition of 250 contemporary works of art. Built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Cantabrian Sea, it is one of several museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and features permanent and visiting exhibits of works by Spanish and international artists. It is one of the largest museums in Spain. A work of contemporary architecture, the building has been hailed as a "signal moment in the architectural culture", because it represents "one of those rare moments when critics, academics, and the general public were all completely united about something", according to architectural critic Paul Goldberger. The museum was the building most frequently named as one of the most important works completed since 1980 in the 2010 World Architecture Survey among architecture experts. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation selected Frank Gehry as the architect, and its director, Thomas Krens, encouraged him to design something daring and innovative. The curves on the exterior of the building were intended to appear random; the architect said that "the randomness of the curves are designed to catch the light". The interior "is designed around a large, light-filled atrium with views of Bilbao's estuary and the surrounding hills of the Basque country". The atrium, which Gehry nicknamed The Flower bec.
