The date on the earliest known authentic map of North America is 1500. It is a chart painted on oxhide by a man named Juan de la Cosa, who was both a shipmate of Columbus on his first two voyages and the owner of the Admiral's original flagship, the Santa Maria. De la Cosa's priceless "Portolan World Chart" is at once of extreme historic importance and very beautiful. It also marks the beginning of the most fascinating enterprise in the history of cartography. For the next three centuries the mapping of America would tell an unfolding story of daring exploration, tenacious settlement, and fierce colonial rivalry. And fortuitously, during this same period, cartography itself ~ both as a science and an art form~would come of age and would thus dedicate some of the most dazzling artifacts produced in its history of the subject of America. The maps faithfully reproduced in this book long summarize this great enterprise. They document both the steady growth of geographic knowledge and the uncanny persistence of geographic fantasy. (Almost until the American Revolution, for example, California was still widely held to be an enormous island, and many people believed that the fabled Northwest Passage flowed into the Pacific in the vicinity of what is now Seattle.) And simultaneously they document the flowering of the mapmaker's art, as such pioneer cartographers as Waldseemuller, Ortelius, Mercator, Captain John Smith, de Champlain, the Blacus and others, in increasing numbers, cast aside the orthodoxies that had shackled mens' minds since the days of Ptomelmy and strove to understand the world afresh. This handsome volume contains 180 extensively captioned maps, nearly all in full color, as well as more than 90 supplementary illustrations. The accompanying text provides valuable background information on such subjects as the history of cartography, the history of New World exploration, and the evolution of mapmaking techniques, as well as biographical notes on the foremost cartographers represented in the book. In short, The Cartography of North America is a feast for both the mind and the senses~an authoritative reference work, and fascinating reading experience, and a stunning art book.
