At the close of the Second World War, Sir Harry and Lady Waring gave permission to their niece, Leslie Winter, and her husband, Philip, to turn Beliers Priory - its service as a military hospital complete - into a preparatory school for boys. Two years later, as the plot of Love Among the Ruins begins to turn, the Priory School is flourishing.A cast of characters quickly gathers around the Winters: Charles Belton, newly-hired school master at the Priory School, and his elder brother, Captain Freddy Belton of the Royal Navy; Susan Dean, the Red Cross Depot Librarian and her sister, Jessica, an actress in thrall to the theatre; Lucy Marling, and her brother Oliver. The social order, no less than its political and economic counterparts, has been ravaged by the domestic tensions of the war. It, too, is in ruins, and the behavior of the young men and women is both bewildered and bewildering - a situation ripe with comic possibilities.

Trade Paperback. This Thirkell Barsetshire Novel Series is a very attractive production by Moyer Bell. Angela Margaret Thirkell (1890 1961) was an English-Australian novelist. Thirkell began writing early in her life in Australia, chiefly through the need for money. On her return to England in 1929, this career continued with journalism, stories for children, and then she began to apply her pen to fiction. Her success as a novelist began with her second novel, High Rising (1933). She set most of her novels in Anthony Trollope's Barsetshire, his fictional English county, which she developed in the 29 novels she set there, among which 'Love Among the Ruins' is the seventeenth. In it, the reader follows the lives and romances of six young adults during the summer of 1947: siblings Lucy and Oliver Marling, brothers Freddy and Charles Belton, and sisters Susan and Jessica Dean. Now in their mid-to-late-twenties, with most of their youth given up to the excitement of war time, these six come in and out of each others lives as they, and all of Barsetshire, attempt to adjust to their post-war existence. The "ruins" referenced by the title are not physical ruins, but rather the state of life after WWII, when Britain was suffering greatly with inadequate food and supplies and "a state of dull resentful apathy with no hope of relief". Thirkell writes movingly of their struggles but balances it with her usual wit and humor, and with well-developed characters and plot. ; Barsetshire Series; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 451 pages.
