Traditional historian/author Henry C. Lea manages to demystify what for those of us in the modern age can seem bizarre and unnatural~and that is, the strange, often horrific, methods of bringing "criminals" to justice that prevailed in the Middle Ages. Lea never resorts to citing only extreme examples of the law in action, but instead takes pains to group together the facts~scrupulously citing the authorities~of a period in history that many are unwilling to rationalize. In this book, the author pays constant attention to the three factors~Christian doctrine, the revival of Roman law, and the codes of living inherited from Europe's Barbarians~that combined to produce what we call the Middle Ages and all that the name implies. And the result, for the reader, is an unbiased understanding of how atrocities came to be committed by the authorities in the name of right belief. In four essays, Lea covers 1) the use of oaths and why that method of proving innocence or guilt declined; 2) the duel, paying close attention to its practice in various countries, its regulations, its opposition by the Church, and finally its abolition; 3) the ordeal ( of boiling water, of fire, of the cross, of cold water, etc.), which was the method of proof that superceded the oath; and 4) the judicial use of torture, which includes an analysis of the roots of such a judicial process and an examination of the influence of the Inquisition in causing its adoption. Also central to Superstition and Force is the author's patient attempts to sift through the material, hold it up to the light of the human condition, and not succumb to despair over the evidence.
