Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xi, [1], 308 pages. Section on "The Voices". Sources. Index. Curt Smith (born March 20, 1951 in Caledonia, New York) is an American author, media host and columnist. In addition to work as a newspaper reporter, Smith was a political speechwriter until 1992 and a host of radio and television programs until 2002. He has written 11 books, including Voices of the Game, which covers the history of baseball broadcasting. Smith is a newspaper columnist in upstate New York and holds an academic appointment at the University of Rochester. Perhaps his best known book is Voices of The Game, which recounts the history of baseball broadcasting from KDKA's first Pittsburgh Pirates broadcast in 1921 to today's enormous media coverage of the game. Features a collection - more than a hundred - of radio and TV announcers, or Voices, telling their favorite baseball stories. This title showcases the Voices of the American League, National League, and the networks in their own words. It celebrates broadcasters, such as Bob Costas, Jon Miller, Bob Uecker, Ken Harrelson, Since the debut of radio and later television, the baseball announcer has been a reporter, entertainer, and extended member of the family. In A Talk in the Park: Nine Decades Of Baseball Tales from the Broadcast Booth, many of the pastime's most popular and famous announcers -- the Voices -- tell their favorite stories. Some are from the public record or author Curt Smith's longtime research. The vast majority are told for the first time by Voices specifically for this book. The result is riveting oral history. Endorsed by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and the National Radio Hall of Fame, this work boasts the largest total of active and retired broadcasters featured in any sports book: 116. Its radio and TV tales include every major-league team and such networks as ESPN, FOX, TBS, and MLB. The announcers discuss players, ballparks, managers, umpires, executives, teams, broadcast humor -- and one another, including the beloved Ernie Harwell, who died in 2010 and to whom the book is dedicated. Here are Bob Wolff airing the longest-ever wild pitch and Howie Rose using the 1969 Mets to pass a high school exam. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
