Book
Hardcover. Color illustrated boards with black lettering, matching dust jacket, 255 pp, color illustrated frontispiece, profusely illustrated in color and bw. "Modern Tokyo bears little resenblance to the city Ando Hiroshige depicted in 'One Hundred Views of Edo'. In the late 1850's Edo, which became Tokyo in 1868, was already one of the world's largest conurbations. Even then, densely built up areas alternated with the gardens of mansions and monasteries. Warehouses and commercial districts sat alongside rice paddies and fishing grounds. For nineteenth-century provincial Japan, Edo was the centre from which fashion, fascinating rumours and innumerable innovations were borne and disseminated. A visit tot he capital was an exciting event, memories could be enhanced by souvenirs purchased there, particularly the woodblock prints of the 'One Hundred Views of Edo" series which recorded the sights and daily life of the Japanese capital in all its rich variety."- Dust jacket. VG/VG (light shelf wear to boards and dust jacket).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Hiroshige One Hundred Views of Edo; Mikhail Uspensky; Sirrocco, 2006. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series - The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō - and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The subjects of his work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre, whose typical focus was on beautiful women, popular actors, and other scenes of the urban pleasure districts of Japan's Edo period (1603 1868). For scholars and collectors, Hiroshige's death marked the beginning of a rapid decline in the ukiyo-e genre, especially in the face of the westernization that followed the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Hiroshige's work came to have a marked influence on western European painting towards the close of the 19th century as a part of the trend in Japonism. Western European artists, such as Manet and Monet, collected and closely studied Hiroshige's compositions. Vincent van Gogh even went so far as to paint copies of two of Hiroshige's prints from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Plum Park in Kameido and Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi bridge and Atake. The 118 illustrations are broken down by the four seasons and each illustration is accompanied by explanations and poetic captions. This large book, 255 pages measuring 320mm X 237mm, is in fine condition in a fine dust jacket that is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A magnificent work. This oversized volume will require additional postage.
