Mais, rien à faire, il a bien vu, vers une heure du matin, une jeune femme se faire poignarder dans un parking de Griffith Park par un homme qui, une fois son crime accompli, s'est enfui dans une voiture immatriculée PLYR1. Alors qu'il avait réussi à survivre dans un Los Angeles qui le terrorise et le fascine, l'enfant s'est alors pissé dessus comme un bébé, a abandonné le hamburger qu'il s'apprêtait à manger et, en oubliant « Le Livre des Présidents » qu'il avait « emprunté » à une bibliothèque et lisait et relisait depuis des mois, s'est enfui dans un autre de ses « endroits ».C'est que Billy n'est pas un gamin comme les autres. Fils d'une alcoolique qui couche avec tous les hommes qui peuvent lui payer un coup à boire, il était tellement maltraité par la dernière conquête de sa mère, - un certain Motor Moron, de son vrai nom, Buell Erville Moran, une espèce de Hell's Angel au petit pied qui n'hésitait pas à le torturer, qu'un jour il a quitté la cambrousse où il vivait pour rejoindre Los Angeles dans l'espoir d'y mener une existence moins terrible. Billy commence à errer dans un Los Angeles où le cauchemar est que son anonymat est brisé.Aussi bien par l'assassin que par la police car, en examinant le lieu du crime et ses environs immédiats, l'inspectrice Petra Connor du LAPD, Hollywood Division, a tôt fait de découvrir que la victime n'est autre que Lisa Ramsey, l'ex-épouse d'un acteur de feuilleton policier, Cart Ramsey, et que quelqu'un, - une femme, elle le pense au vu des indices -, a assisté à la scène.Naturellement, tous les soupçons se portent sur la personne de l'acteur que son ex a publiquement accusé de l'avoir battue. Mais une chose est de soupçonner et une autre de prouver. Une autre piste est possible: celle d'un autrichien qui aurait déjà tué plusieurs femmes de la même manière avant de disparaître dans son Autriche natale. De fait, c'est vite l'impasse, l'acteur étant maître dans l'art de ne rien dire et d'égarer les soupçons.Seule la personne qui lisait « Le livre des Présidents » pourrait remettre les flics sur la bonne route.
