Le train s'arrête dans une toute petite gare et un garçon monte à bord pour vendre des boulettes de lait caillé. Il joue Brahms au violon de manière prodigieuse, sortant les passagers de leur torpeur. Le voyageur découvre que celui qu'il avait pris pour un enfant est en fait un homme de 27 ans. L'histoire de Yerzhan peut alors commencer.Yerzhan grandit avec ses grands-parents, sa mère et son oncle dans la steppe kazakhe. La seule autre maison du coin est celle de son amie d'enfance et promise, Aisulu, qui est entourée de ses parents et de sa grand-mère. L'unique lien avec le reste de la civilisation, c'est ce long train qui passe chaque jour dans la petite gare de Kara-Shagan à laquelle les deux maisons sont adossées. L'enfance de Yerzhan et Aisulu est heureuse et insouciante, bercée par les histoires racontées par les grands-mères, entre les moments partagés sur la route pour l'école à dos d'âne, les joyeuses bagarres des deux familles, et la chasse au renard. Un Bulgare de passage apprend à Yerzhan à jouer du violon, il est merveilleusement doué. L'avenir s'annonce radieux, Yerzhan deviendra musicien et il épousera Aisulu. Mais à quelques dizaines de kilomètres de Kara-Shagan se trouve la Zone et le Lac interdit.Personne ne s'y baigne, c'est défendu, sauf Yerzhan, qui s'y glisse jusqu'à la taille sans réfléchir.
