Ce qu'arrive à combiner BHL dans ce récit, c'est à la fois un portrait vibrant d'un journaliste qui en savait trop et, à partir des investigations de Pearl, l'analyse de la situation actuelle incroyablement dangereuse au Pakistan. On y trouve de grands savants atomistes qui sont des djihadistes convaincus voulant se doter de la bombe A, et également la CIA qui joue un jeu dangereux d'équilibriste entre les services secrets pakistanais et le gouvernement de Musharraf. BHL montre bien que l'assassinat de Daniel Pearl n'est pas un simple fait divers. Entre le bourreau et sa victime, entre David Pearl et Omar Sheikh, il y a un lien tragique qui se noue. L'histoire d'Omar Sheikh, dûment retracée aussi, nous interroge et nous bouleverse. Ce jeune Pakistanais, né en Angleterre dans un milieu favorisé et cultivé, culturellement occidentalisé, bascule dans le militantisme radical lors d'un voyage en Bosnie, puis dans le meurtre au Pakistan, qu'il voit, comme beaucoup de jeunes islamistes d'aujourd'hui, comme "le pays des purs à l'islamisme intègre", .
