A la fin du XIXe siècle, l arrivée du chemin de fer permet de développer une villégiature de luxe et, à partir de 1936, l avènement des congés payés attire un important tourisme de masse. Il est donc tout naturel qu une région présentant autant d atouts ait vu naître, dès les débuts de la photographie, autant de vocations : citons les photographes Charles Nègre, Félix Busin ou Victor Guizol, ou le banquier Jean Luce, amateur éclairé. De grandes agences envoient des photographes pour assurer une couverture des lieux pittoresques : Grasse est alors abondamment " mitraillée " par Neurdein, Leroy et Lévy.
