A partir d'une documentation abondante, provenant des archives municipales de Rive-de-Gier ou d'archives privées, l'auteure dresse un tableau d'ensemble de la ville de 1939 à 1945. Les faits, établis au regard de plusieurs sources, sont rapportés avec un souci constant d'objectivité et de respect des personnes. Le récit s'ouvre en septembre 1938, par une manifestation ouvrière contre Daladier, et se clôt au printemps 1945, au retour des déportés et des prisonniers. Michelle Destour nous dépeint Rive-de-Gier et ses habitants mis à mal par l'état de guerre, le régime de Vichy et l'occupation allemande. Puis elle nous décrit la Résistance, les résistants et la répression dont ils sont l'objet et, enfin, les combats de la Libération. Une part importante est faite à l'évocation des femmes et des hommes.
