C'est le roman discret d'un monde bouleversant de solitude, d'oublis, de ruines et de décomposition. Au coeur de ce parcours, il y a aussi les retrouvailles avec une vieille cousine et la maison de Carrières-sous-bois qui cache un secret de famille que le narrateur révèle pour la première fois : le fantôme de l'oncle Joseph. Mais le chaos de ce monde périphérique, sous le regard aigu du narrateur, cache lui aussi un mystère : la présence de toute une vie sauvage et animale nichée souvent dans d'improbables lieux.
