Der gemeinsame Nenner ist für Arnulf Zitelmann, dass Religionen versprechen, dem Zufall einen Sinn zu geben - und dass die großen Religionsstifter zu ihrer Zeit Ketzer, Aufrührer, Neuerer waren. Zitelmann, ein erfahrener Jugendbuchautor, Theologe und Religionslehrer, hat entschieden, sich in seinem Buch vor allem den fünf großen Religionen zu widmen: Taoismus, Buddhismus, Judentum, Christentum und Islam bekommen je ein Kapitel. Aber ein Handbuch der Weltreligionen ist es nicht geworden, sondern ein sehr persönliches Buch - Zitelmann, der sich etwas kokett als "frommer Atheist" bezeichnet, erzählt entlang seiner eigenen Biographie und verirrt sich nie in abstrakten Konzepten. Friedfertigkeit und Sanftheit des Taoismus kontrastiert er mit seiner Erziehung in der Hitlerzeit. Dem Judentum begegnete er zum ersten Mal durch eine Kinderbibel, dem Islam in den Romanen Karl Mays. Die Weltreligionen ist ein stilles, nachdenkliches, philosophisches Buch geworden. Für Jugendliche ist es sicher eine interessante Erfahrung, das Christentum hier nur als eine Religion unter vielen kennen zu lernen. Auch die faszinierenden Parallelen, Wechselwirkungen und Beziehungen zwischen den verschiedenen Glaubensrichtungen sind für einige Aha-Effekte gut. So kann das Buch ein interessantes Gegengewicht zum Religionsunterricht bilden, denn die Schule, so Zitelmann, ist eben eine "Institution, die westlichen Denkmustern verhaftet ist" - und bei den vielen einzelnen Unterrichtsstunden kommt der Überblick, das Begreifen des großen Ganzen zu kurz. Genau das kann jedoch Zitelmanns Buch bieten, es liefert vernetztes, sehr differenziertes Wissen auf leicht lesbare Art. Deshalb kann man es ohne Bedenken auch Erwachsenen ans Herz legen. Fanatische Anhänger der einen oder anderen Religion könnten sich ärgern über die Darstellung. Nicht, dass Zitelmann jemals respektlos wäre. Nein! Aber er hat es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, die Religionen und ihre Anfänge in ihren historischen Kontext einzubetten. Er interpretiert sie als Produkte der Kulturen, der sie entstammen. So kann man den Buddhismus mit seinen endlosen Zyklen von Wiedergeburten nur wirklich verstehen, wenn man das Kastensystem Indiens kennt. Andersherum kann man die gegenwärtige politische Situation im Nahen Osten leichter interpretieren, wenn man weiß, dass es schon zu Muhammads Zeiten Zusammenstöße zwischen Juden und Muslimen gab. Nüchtern und exakt, mit genau dem richtigen Quentchen Distanz nähert er sich den brisanten Themen - und gibt auch zu, wenn ihn eine religiöse Überlieferung verwirrt hat. Er hat keine Scheu, kritische Fragen zu stellen und regt zum Nachdenken an. Ein Beispiel: Bei der Bibel warnt er, dass sie kein historischer Bericht sei, sondern ein Glaubenszeugnis, das durch viele Hände gegangen ist. Kleine Kostprobe aus dem Text: "Aus heutiger Distanz können wir nicht sagen, wieso Jesus in Jerusalem scheiterte. Die einschlägigen Berichte wurden von der konservativen Jakobus-Gemeinde überliefert, wahrscheinlich von Griechenjuden schriftlich festgehalten und redigiert und die Texte sind ständig wechselnden Interessen dienstbar gemacht worden." Auch im (sehr ausgewogenen) Kapitel über den Islam findet sich so manches, was einem echten Gotteskrieger nicht gefallen dürfte. Und den Saudis mit ihren protzigen Gebäuden und Schnellstraßen erst recht nicht. "Nach sieben oder acht Jahrhunderten glänzender Entwicklung kam der Fortschritt im Islam zum Stillstand", berichtet Zitelmann. "Warum? Ich weiß es nicht, und es schmerzt mich."
