Im Laufe seines Lebens erforschte er unablässig die Empfindungen, die die Realität, vor allem Landschaften, im menschlichen Auge auslösen. Der in Paris geborene Künstler entdeckte als junger Mann die Pleinairmalerei in den Landschaften der Provinz für sich. In seinem Bestreben, den sich unablässig ändernden Eindruck der Wirklichkeit einzufangen, ging Monet über den Impressionismus und gleichzeitig über die Grenzen der Tafelmalerei hinaus: In Giverny malte er die Serien der Bilder von Pappeln, Heuhaufen und der Kathedrale von Rouen, die ein Motiv in unterschiedlicher, abgewandelter Darstellung zeigen.
