Einen letzten Höhepunkt erreichte seine Kunst, als er im Alter krankheitsbedingt nicht mehr malen konnte und sich dem Scherenschnitt zuwandte. Es entstanden farbenfrohe Collagen aus mit Gouachefarben bestrichenem Papier, beschwingte Improvisationen aus Farbe und Rhythmus, von denen 20 im Jahr 1947 unter dem Titel Jazz als Künstlerbuch erschienen, eines der wichtigsten Künstlerbücher des 20. Jahrhunderts, Summe und Krönung einer abenteuerlichen Lebensreise. Dieser Band zeichnet einen künstlerischen Werdegang nach, der, ausgehend vom Neoimpressionismus und Fauvismus, über immer radikalere Formvereinfachung letztlich den Weg zur reinen Farbfeldmalerei eröffnete.
