Ausstellung und Publikation betrachten die Kunst der 1960er und frühen 1970er Jahre unter den Aspekten des Systemdenkens und begreifen sie als Kommunikation und Systemkritik. Vor allem Werke der Minimal Art und der Konzeptkunst befassten sich mit Grundsätzen des sprachlichen Kommunikationssystems und dabei mit Differenz und Wiederholung. Zeichenhaftigkeit, Serialität, Regelhaftigkeit sowie die Kontextualisierung des architektonischen und institutionellen Umfelds waren weitere wichtige Merkmale. Die Werke nahmen die Prinzipien des Systemdenkens formal auf und stellten sie inhaltlich zur Debatte. Die Betrachtenden mussten ihre Standpunkte sowohl räumlich als auch gedanklich selbst beziehen und wurden so zu einem maßgeblichen Teil der Werke. 50 Jahre später ist das Systemdenken wirksamer denn je und durch die Digitalisierung unumgänglich für das Verständnis der Industriegesellschaften geworden. Komplexe Systeme vernetzen Wissen, werten Daten aus, steuern Informationsflüsse und determinieren Entscheidungs- und Produktionsprozesse. Sie bilden unser Umfeld, in dem wir vor allem nach Systemkompatibilität, Verfügbarkeit und Reichweite streben. Die Ausstellung und die Publikation zeigen repräsentative Werke der 1960er und 1970er Jahre zusammen mit zeitgenössischer Kunst, die sich mit heute systemrelevanten Fragen der Prozesshaftigkeit, der Datenverarbeitung, der Informationsverzerrung und der Systemkompatibilität auseinandersetzen.
