Der Graf gibt jedoch nicht auf und wirbt nach einigen Monaten erneut um die Witwe, sodass es schließlich zu einer zweiten, wirklichen Hochzeit kommt.Aufgebaut ist die 1808 erschienene Novelle, die 1976 verfilmt wurde, wie ein Kriminalroman. Erst nach und nach erfährt der Leser die Hintergründe der ungewöhnlichen Zeitungsannonce der Marquise von O., und so bleibt es bis zum Schluss spannend. Zeitgenossen Kleists empfanden das Werk als Skandal, da es eine Vergewaltigung thematisiert. Heute wird es wegen seines sozialkritischen Ansatzes geschätzt, und für viele Leser ist die Novelle ein frühes Beispiel weiblicher Emanzipation, sodass 'Die Marquise von O.' mittlerweile eines der bekanntesten und meistgelesenen Stücke der Weltliteratur ist.
