Balthasar Burkhard reist um zu fotografieren, ohne ein passionierter Reisender zu sein. Es ist nicht das Unter- wegssein an sich, das ihn fasziniert. Ihn treiben die Bilder, die als innere Vorstellungen entstehen und deren Begegnung er in der Realität sucht. Die Bilder haben im Kopf des Künstlers eine imaginäre Existenz, bevor sie als Fotografie ein reales Dasein erhalten. Bei der Ausführung ist dann wenig dem Zufall überlassen, mit Ausnahme der nur bedingt kalkulierbaren Begegnungen der Kamera mit wilden Tieren. Die Reise-Fotografien sind den drei elementaren Bildthemen Tier, Stadt und Landschaft zuzuordnen.
