Pereda censura que los personajes vuelvan «ahítos y saciados de todo lo imaginable, para continuar viviendo amancebados a la vista del lector, con minuciosos pormenores sobre su manera de pecar»; Clarín la calificó de «boutade pseudoerótica de la ilustre dama» y «. . . antipático poema de una jamona atrasada de caricias. . . ». Las críticas a doña Emilia, como se ve, incidieron más en el fondo autobiográfico de la novela que en sus valores literarios; en su relación con José Lázaro Galdiano, a quien está dedicada esta obra, mientras mantenía una relación semiclandestina con Benito Pérez Galdós. Con todo, y en palabras de la misma doña Emilia, fue una de sus obras más vendidas: «Mis libros se venden poco, excepto San Francisco de Asís, La cuestión palpitante, Un viaje de novios, Los Pazos de Ulloa, Cuentos de amor, De mi tierra, Insolación y Morriña». Hoy, sin embargo, hay quien la ha considerado una buena muestra de un feminismo incipiente, una defensa de la igualdad de hombres y mujeres en cuestiones de moral sexual.
