Los cristianos sabemos que el pecado divide y que la redención une y que, por tanto la unidad de las naciones puede ser un signo del Reino de Dios, aunque se ignore a sí mismo como signo. Todo dependerá, en el caso de la construcción de la "nueva Europa", de los fines que se persigan y de los medios que se empleen. El Tratado de Maastricht mejora la situación anterior, evidentemente; pero su costo social va a ser muy grave, al requerir políticas económicas que serán mucho más penosas para las economías débiles. Tal vez sea mejor perder un poco de eficacia y de velocidad para ganar un poco de justicia social. No podemos ignorar que existe una relación dialéctica de dominación/ dependencia entre los fuertes y los débiles. Tampoco podemos pretender quedarnos sólo en la "Europa de los mercaderes", fortaleza cerrada frente al resto de los pueblos pobres. Lo que es seguro, en cualquier caso, es que el posible liderazgo resultante de la Unión Europea sólo podrá justificarse radicalmente si se hace con la decisión y la voluntad de contribuir amplia y generosamente al bien común de los más desfavorecidos.
