A cidade vivia o fervor da República de Weimar, o auge criativo de Alfred Döblin, Fritz Lang e Kurt Weill, o frenesi dos cabarés. Era um ambiente cultural estimulante e mundano - embora a barbárie e as trevas estivessem logo ali, ā espreita. O período berlinense foi de grande importância para a formaįão do jovem crítico. Na cidade travou contato com nomes relevantes da intelligentsia local, como Thomas Mann - a quem entrevistou nos elegantes salões do Hotel Adlon, no bulevar Unter den Linden - e o historiador Friedrich Meinecke - a cujas aulas assistiu. A experięncia no estrangeiro e o distanciamento serviram ainda de incentivo para a reflexão sobre o país natal. Datam da estadia na capital alemã os apontamentos para "Corpo e alma do Brasil", artigo publicado em 1935 na revista Espelho, e que seria a base de Raízes do Brasil, lanįado no ano seguinte. Essa Berlim brechtiana foi também cenário de uma aventura amorosa entre o brasileiro e certa Anne Ernst, da qual resultou um filho, Sergio Ernst, que o pai jamais conheceu. De volta ao Brasil, Sergio Buarque daria largos passos rumo ao ensaísmo acadęmico, se tornaria professor universitário e diretor de museu, logo um dos maiores intelectuais do país. Casou-se, teve sete filhos, entre os quais Chico Buarque. Seu "mau passo juvenil" não era exatamente um tabu, porém estava longe de ser assunto na família. Chico só soube da história em 1967, aos 22 anos. Estava na casa de Manuel Bandeira em companhia de Vinicius de Moraes e Tom Jobim, e o poeta pernambucano deixou escapar algo sobre aquele "filho alemão do seu pai". Quando se preparava para escrever um novo romance, o autor pediu a Luiz Schwarcz - como costuma fazer ao fim dos períodos de entressafra literária - que lhe enviasse livros de que gostara nos últimos tempos. No pacote foram Austerlitz, de W. G. Sebald, cruciante investigaįão ficcional da memória e da história pessoal, e Paris, a festa continuou, de Alan Riding, uma história narrativa das manifestaįões culturais na Paris ocupada pelos nazistas (a bem da verdade um relato da acomodaįão de grande parte dos artistas e empresários da cultura franceses ās forįas de ocupaįão). A leitura de Austerlitz despertou em Chico Buarque a angústia pelo destino incerto desse irmão que jamais conhecera - e que bem poderia ter sucumbido aos anos de terror numa "cidade bombardeada e partida ao meio", ou mesmo cerrado fileiras com a juventude hitlerista. Transcorridas quase cinco décadas, decidiu então tomar o assunto como matéria para um novo livro. Logo assomou a necessidade de saber o que se passara com Sergio Ernst, por motivos afetivos mas agora também literários. Afinal, como desatar os nós da narrativa sem conhecer o fim da história real? Por sua vez, um pianista salvo do nazismo pelo mítico benemérito americano Varian Fry, citado em Paris, a festa continuou, evocou lembranįas da infância paulistana do autor -, e deu-lhe o mote para uma figura central do romance. Comeįava-se assim a desenrolar o novelo. Chico Buarque já enfrentava as primeiras páginas quando tomou conhecimento de uma correspondęncia - preservada por sua mãe, Maria Amelia Buarque de Holanda - entre autoridades do governo alemão e seu pai, ali chamado de Sergio de Hollander. Já no poder, os nazistas queriam se certificar de que a crianįa, então sob a guarda do Estado, não tinha antepassados judeus, a fim de liberá-la para adoįão. Ao tomar cięncia do teor dos documentos, Chico deu início a uma pesquisa exaustiva sobre a vida e o paradeiro do garoto. Por intermédio do historiador brasileiro Sidney Chalhoub, acionado pela editora enquanto passava um período acadęmico em Berlim, os pesquisadores João Klug (historiador) e Dieter Lange (museólogo) embarcaram num trabalho verdadeiramente detetivesco, conseguindo afinal traįar o destino do "irmão alemão", com descobertas surpreendentes.
