Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very good to fine condition. Quarto. viii, (1) 246pp. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering and publisher's device on cover, gilt lettering on spine. Studia-Post-Biblica Volume 31. "The writings of the fourth century Samaritan philosopher Marqah have been totally ignored by subsequent generations of philosophers. My aim here is to argue that this fate is not his due, and that on the contrary his chief work, the Memar (= Teaching). contains a far-reaching philosophical system deserving our close attention." (Preface). "Samaritanism and Judaism spring from a common matrix in the Israelite religion. It has, indeed, been held that the Samaritans are a Jewish sect. But though describing Samaritanism as a separate religion perhaps overemphasizes its independence of Judaism, the identification of Samaritanism as a sect of Judaism may be held to overemphasize its dependence. It is sufficient for us to note that Samaritans and Jews have shared origins. But at what point did the two groups separate? There are two conflicting answers to this question. One answer is Samaritan and the other Judaist." (Introduction). Library sticker at tail of spine. Library stamps on inside cover, bottom edge, title page, and inside back cover; here with due date sticker and library pocket. Library barcode on back cover. Except for library markings in fine condition.
