As an IAS officer, Shri Tripathi served on various posts with distinction, both in the State Government of Uttar Pradesh, and the Government of India. From 1995 to 1997, he served as Secretary, Government of India, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, and from October 1997, he held the post of Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha, till his retirement in 2002. Shri Tripathi served the ASI for some time in 1987, as DG. He is a member of CABA, Government of India; Indian International Centre, New Delhi; Executive Committee of The Bhawans Centre, Allahabad, and The Bhawans Mehta Institute, Bharwari (UP); chairman of the Akhila Bharatiya Sanskrit Parishad, Lucknow; patron of the Sanskrit Society of India, New Delhi; and Chancellors Nominee in the Executive Council of the University of Lucknow.
