Product DescriptionNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the bestselling author of V2 and Fatherland-a WWII-era spy thriller set against the backdrop of the fateful Munich Conference of September 1938. Now a Netflix film starring Jeremy Irons. With this electrifying novel about treason and conscience, loyalty and betrayal, "Harris has brought history to life with exceptional skill" (The Washington Post).Hugh Legat is a rising star of the British diplomatic service, serving at 10 Downing Street as a private secretary to the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain. Paul von Hartmann is on the staff of the German Foreign Office--and secretly a member of the anti-Hitler resistance. The two men were friends at Oxford in the 1920s, but have not been in contact since. Now, when Hugh flies with Chamberlain from London to Munich, and Hartmann travels on Hitler's train overnight from Berlin, their paths are set on a disastrous collision course. And once again, Robert Harris gives us actual events of historical importance--here are Hitler, Chamberlain, Mussolini, Daladier--at the heart of an electrifying, unputdownable novel.ReviewAn intelligent thrillerwith exacting attention to historical detail. The novels power lies in the conflict between our hindsight and the characters all-too-believable hopes and fears.-The Times (UK), Best Historical Fiction of 2017Once again, Harris has brought history to life with exceptional skill.-Patrick Anderson, The Washington Post[Harriss] writing remains lean and understated throughout Munich, even when the spy-craft starts. . . . The result is an entertaining mix of diplomacy and derring-do . . . history buffs should find it exhilarating.-Doug Childers, The Richmond-Times DispatchHarris has built a career upon painstakingly researched what-if stories centered on World War II, and with Munich, he weaves fiction into the fabric of history without even the tiniest hint of a seam. This is a fine addition to a fine writers oeuvre.-Bruce Tierney, BookpageDensely researched, tightly constructed and deftly written.-D.J. Taylor, The Wall Street JournalThumbs up. Harris fashions an absorbing tale.-Metro (London)Another thrilling historical novel from Robert Harris. [Hes] on sure and familiar ground in Munich-he quickly settles into the mid-20th century setting that made Fatherland and Enigma so compelling, and the claustrophobic feel of the conference carriers on from last years exploration of Vatican politics, Conclave. . . Softcover. Condition: Good. Product DescriptionThe best-selling author of Enigma and Fatherland turns to today's Vatican in a ripped-from-the-headlines novel, and gives us his most ambitious, page-turning thriller yet--where the power of God is nearly equaled by the ambition of men.The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, one hundred and eighteen cardinals from all over the globe will cast their votes in the world's most secretive election. They are holy men. But they have ambition. And they have rivals. Over the next seventy-two hours one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on Earth.ReviewHarris has written a gripping, smart book. . . . This could become the Catholic version of The Satanic Verses.-Vanessa Friedman, The New York Times Book ReviewSplendid . . . Harris does not disappoint. . . . Whether you have faith in God, the Church, or neither, Conclave will keep you richly entertained.-Dennis Drabelle, The Washington PostTriumphant . . . I am about to use a word I have never knowingly used in any review of any book ever. During my 25-odd years of writing about books I have done my best to avoid clichs, slipshod summaries, oracular pronouncements and indeed anything else that might appear emblazoned on a book jacket. Nonetheless, there is only one possible word to describe Robert Harriss new novel, and it is this: unputdownable.-Ian Sansom, The GuardianA gripping read in the authentic Harris mould . . . Conclave, though, is more than a crime novel, it is also a psychological and political thriller . . . The more one looks, the more cunning the book seems. Conclave is a triumphant addition to Harriss acclaimed output.-David Grylls, The Sunday TimesA gripping read. There are plenty of plot twists, revelations and high politicking to hook readers in. . . . An ecclesiastical version of House of Cards . . . Conclave is admirably brisk-and its final twist is great fun.-Robbie Millen, The TimesA slick and fast-paced thriller . . . This entertaining and satisfying page-turner tells the tense story of the Machiavellian machinations of ambitious men, locked in a power-struggle that can only end in a puff of white smoke and power.-Huston Gilmore, The Daily ExpressAmbition and intrigues are familiar ground to a former political journalist . . . gripping.-Rachel Cooke, The ObserverFast-written and suspenseful, its elegantly written entertainment from a first-rate storyteller.-Simon Humphreys, The Mail on SundayDespite papal fiction being such a crowded church, Harris, in Conclave, contrives a twist involving the number of cardinal-electors that seems to me completely new.-Mark Lawson, The GuardianThe novel begins to grip like a vice and manages to convey all the drama of an election without resorting to melodrama. He pulls off the difficult trick of making his cardinals seem no less holy for all their human foibles and, although this ruminative and low-key novel is very different from Harriss other books, it is well up to their standard.-Charlotte Heathcote, Sunday ExpressThe smartest bestselling author at work today . . . [Conclave is] a modern-day story that explores the power, glory and skullduggery behind the process of electing a new pope.-Richard T. Kelly, Esquire (UK)Another high-class Harris thriller.-James Walton, Readers Digest (UK)An impressive outing from an extremely versatile author.-Publishers Weekly"Robert Harris, creator of grand, symphonic thrillers from Fatherland to An Officer and a Spy, scores with a chamber piece of a novel set in the Vatican in the days after a fictional pope dies.An illuminating read for anyone interested in the inner workings of the Catholic Church; for prelate-fiction superfans, it is pure temptation." -Kirkus Reviews, starred reviewAbout the AuthorROBERT HARRIS is the author of ten best-selling novels: Fatherland, Enigma, Archangel, Pompeii, Imperium, The Ghost Writer, Conspirata, The Fear Inde.

On the city's western outskirts, plumes of rain drifted across the surface of Lake Havel like smoke.Sky and water merged into a sheet of gray, broken only by the dark line of the opposite bank. Nothing stirred there. No lights showed.Xavier March, homicide investigator with the Berlin Kriminalpolizei -- the Kripo -- climbed out of his Volkswagen and tilted his face to the rain. He was a connoisseur of this particular rain. He knew the taste of it, the smell of it. It was Baltic rain from the north, cold and seascented, tangy with salt. For an instant he was back twenty years, in the conning tower of a U-boat, slipping out of Wilhelmshaven, lights doused, into the darkness. He looked at his watch. Robert Dennis Harris (born 7 March 1957) is an English novelist. He is a former journalist and BBC television reporter. Although he began his career in non-fiction, his fame rests upon his works of historical fiction. Beginning with the bestseller Fatherland, Harris focused on events surrounding the Second World War, followed by works set in ancient Rome. His most recent works centre on contemporary history. Harris was educated at Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he was president of the Union and editor of the student newspaper Varsity. Harris's first book appeared in 1982. A Higher Form of Killing, a study of chemical and biological warfare, was written with fellow BBC journalist Jeremy Paxman. Other non-fiction works followed: Gotcha! The Government, the Media and the Falklands Crisis (1983), The Making of Neil Kinnock (1984), Selling Hitler (1986), an investigation of the Hitler Diaries scandal, and Good and Faithful Servant (1990), a study of Bernard Ingham, Margaret Thatcher's press secretary. Harris was a columnist for the Sunday Times, but gave it up in 1997. He returned to journalism in 2001, writing for the Daily Telegraph.[24] He was named "Columnist of the Year" at the 2003 British Press Awards. This book tells the story of the final fifteen years in the life of the Roman statesman Cicero, imagined in the form of a biography written by his secretary, Tiro. Whenever possible, the letters and speeches and descriptions of events have been drawn from the original sources. The central problem that this book presents is a timeless one: How to keep political freedom unsullied by personal ambition, vested interests, and the erosive effects of ceaseless, senseless foreign wars. Derived from a Kirkus review: Set during the last gasp of the Roman Republic, the final volume of Harris' Cicero trilogy chronicles the great Roman statesman's fateful encounters with both Julius and Augustus Caesar. Harris has written smart, gripping thrillers with settings as varied as England during World War II and the contemporary world of international finance, but his Cicero novels are of men of towering intellect and humanity-and in their visceral evocation of history. The first two books, Imperium and Conspirata, recounted events familiar only to classical history buffs-Cicero's rise from relative obscurity to become one of Rome's leading lawyers, orators, and writers and, in 63 B.C.E., getting the top job, consul. This third book starts with his exile after running afoul of Julius Caesar, the brilliant general whose dangerous ambition Cicero alone seems to grasp. The plot hurtles toward the most famous incident in all of Roman history-the assassination of Caesar. Cicero is not involved in the plot, but he assumes a major role in its aftermath as Mark Antony, an enemy, and Octavian (later Augustus), a young friend who is also Caesar's adopted son, vie for leadership of the empire. The book is charming as well as engrossing, largely due to the immensely likable person of Cicero, who is wise but not pedantic, moral but not sanctimonious, courageous but wary of the grandstanding of the martyr. In Harris' hands, the other principle actors emerge fully rounded: Cato, the uncompromising stoic; Pompey, brave but vainglorious; Crassus, greedy and self-serving; Brutus, whom Cicero feared "may have been educated out of his wits"; Julius Caesar, whose "success had made him vain, and his vanity had devoured his reason"; and Mark Antony, who "has all of Caesar's worst qualities and none of his best." Unfortunately for Cicero, his assessment of Octavian-"he's a nice boy, and I hope he survives, but he's no Caesar"-proves fatally wrong. First United States Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.
