Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Manuscript / Paper Collectible
No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. Here is a handsome piece of commercial paper ephemera: A 1925 John Deere Plow Company letterhead from the company's Syracuse office. It has a typewritten communication from E. B. Scott of the John Deere Company in Syracuse to Mr. Frank Doyle of Port Leyden, N.Y., dated May 7th, 1925 . The typewritten letter is signed E. J. Scott, in ink, in his hand. The gist of the letter is about a shipment of maple syrup ordered by Mr. Scott from Mr. Doyle. Under the typewritten portion of the document is a reply (I am presuming from Doyle) in blue pencil. The letterhead itself is very handsome, with the engraved portrait of John Deere in the top left corner. Under the portrait is printed, "John Deere He gave to the world the steel plow". More centrally placed is a small engraved company logo of a running stag, around which is printed: JOHN DEERE, MOLINE, ILL. Dimension is 8 1/2" x 11". Condition is excellent - Nicely preserved - Near Fine. The are two folds, as this was sent through the post. There is also a slight curvature at the left side - this is not unsightly.
Published by Bradford Kennedy & Sons, 1892
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Manuscript / Paper Collectible
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Bradford Kennedy & Sons were the successors to Kennedy, Spaulding & Company, wholesale Hardware merchants. The business occupied a handsomely ornate stone building at 32 Clinton Street. That building is no longer existing, and Bradford Kennedy & Sons has long been out of business. It's a handsome letterhead, featuring a nice engraved depiction of the Kennedy, 5 story Spaulding Building, which had a large eagle with outspread wings adorning the very tip top of the building. A horse-drawn closed carriage and a single horse open carriage are depicted in front of the building. '****************************************** The invoice, measuring 8 1/2" x 6 3/16", filled out by hand in ink, and dated June 30, 1892, lists a couple dozen Wood Rakes; 1/2 dozen Snaths (Handles for scythes); a mounted Grindstone; and a tin box 14 x 20. The total for all this was $15.38. ******************************************* Bradford Kennedy & Sons, obviously wished to save money by using a stamp on the already existing letterheads. It is likely that a new letterhead was in the works. The invoice was made out to L. J. Macy of Pulaski, New York. L. J Macy, who lived in Sandy Creek, NY, owned and operated a hardware store in Pulaski, NY. He also was the head of The Macy Insurance Agency, specializing in Fire and Marine insurance. Macy was very active in the community and was a member of several fraternal organizations, including the Masons and the Odd Fellows. Col. Macy was, for a while, the head of the New York Division of the Sons of Veterans. ******************************************* CONDITION - VERY GOOD - The invoice was folded three times, likely for insertion in a mailing envelope, else the document is clean, having only modest signs of handling. The back is blank and clean.
Published by Butler & Johnson, 1890
Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
No Binding. Condition: Very Good. This is a handsome commercial letterhead from 1890. It is a handwritten invoice from Butler & Johnson of Syracuse NY to L. J. Macy of Pulaski, NY. Butler & Johnson was a hardware company that specialized in stoves, ranges, furnaces, and household goods and accoutrements. L. J Macy, who lived in Sandy Creek, NY, owned and operated a hardware store in Pulaski, NY. Macy was very active in the community and was a member of several fraternal organizations, including the Masons and the Odd Fellows. ********************************************* The invoice, dated January 1890, is hand-written on a printed form which has a handsome lithographed letterhead depicting a Michener stove. We can see that Butler & Johnson had then recently become successors to W. P. Butler. The business was located at 220 & 230 East Genesee Street in Syracuse. The form has two punched holes at the top edge (For placement in the form book). ****************************************** PHYSICAL DETAILS : Used Invoice Letterhead, measuring 8 1/4" x 13 3/4". The invoice features some ciphering along the left edge. It was folded several times, horizontally and vertically for postal delivery. The envelope is not present. Macy was obviously buying wholesale from the Syracuse company to sell retail in his Pulaski hardware store. Pulaski is a little over 38 miles due north of Syracuse, just east of Lake Ontario. We see that Macy bought, among other items, quantities of Cuspidors (spelled 'cuspadors' on the invoice); spoons, trays and bowls; Acme Fry Pans; Bowl Steamers; Tea Pots; and Coffee Pots. At the bottom of the list is a stamped discount allowance. We see the invoice has been marked 'Paid'. ********************************************** CONDITION Aside for a bit of light smudging, the bill is nice and clean, with the letterhead engraving displaying brightly. The reverse side is blank. This antique invoice will be sent folded, just as found . ************************************** MORE ABOUT MR. MACY . Macy was born in Chatham Four Comers, town of Ghent, Columbia county, N. Y., in 1848, of English parentage, his father and mother both being Quakers whose ancestors left England in 1632 and settled in Nantucket. His parents moved to Oswego county in 1851 and settled on a farm in the town of Sandy Creek. In 1861 they moved to PulaskiL. J. Macy is quite prominently identified with the order of freemasonry and other fraternities in Pulaski and vicinity and took a conspicuous hand in the politics of the town. He was engaged in the hardware and plumbing business in Pulaski since 1882 at which time he bought the shop and store of Lyman & Readle a business which he carried on in a large and liberal way. Mr. Macy bought the Salmon River House and converted it into a hardware store. He also served four years as supervisor of the town of Richland and was an active legislator for his constituency.

Letter. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Autograph; 1 pages; Typed note SIGNED by Joseph Alsop with a hand-written note at bottom written to Katherine "Kay" Winton Evans, jounalist and wife of Rowland Evans. Transcript: "August 23, 1977 / Dear Kay, / Forgive me for the lateness of this note. / Writing you slipped my mind over the weekend. / But that does not mean that dinner was anything / but really smashing. The food and drink were / perfect, as always. But above all it was wonder-/ ful to have a real talk with you and Rowly / again. And Kiku is always tremendously good / value, too. // [Signed in ink] Love / Joe / When you say 'the book' in / relation to the Cuisinart, which / book is it?" This note refers to a small dinner at the Evans' house on Thursday August 18; menu included pesto pasta, cold steak, fresh salad, fruit and cake [ref: Kay's daily minder]. Joseph Wright Alsop V (1910 1989) was an American journalist and syndicated newspaper columnist from the 1930s through the 1970s. He was an influential journalist and top insider in Washington from 1945 to the late 1960s, often in conjunction with his brother Stewart Alsop. Joseph Alsop became a close friend and influential adviser to Kennedy after his election. His insider access to the Washington elite granted him plenty of confidential information, revealed mostly at the dinner parties of the "Georgetown Set." Note: In the late 1970s and the 1980s, Alsop resorted to typing such notes and letters, as his carpal tunnel syndrome was aggravated by penning such missives. He was also quite interested in cuisine and its preparation. PROVENANCE: Rowland Evans was a provocative newspaper columnist, commentator and author who antagonized liberal politicians and championed conservative causes. In 1963, Mr. Evans and Mr. Novak began writing ''Inside Report,'' an insider's view of politics that was published four times a week until Mr. Evans retired in 1993. The pair also pioneered the medium of cable television with the political discussion program ''Evans & Novak'' -- carried on CNN from that network's beginning. Rowland Evans and his wife Kay (Katherine Winton Evans), also a respected writer and editor, were mainstays on the Washington social scene, hosting many memorable gatherings in their handsome Georgetown house -- to which flocked influential and remarkable people drawn from journalism, politics and general society over the decades from the 1960s to the 2000s. Joseph Alsop and Susan Mary Alsop were good friends and Georgetown neighbors of the Evans; members of the Georgetown Set through the last half of the 20th century. ; Signed by Author.
