Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Don Carpenter was one of the finest novelists working in the west. His first novel, A Hard Rain Falling, first published in 1966, has been championed by Richard Price, and George Pelacanos who called it 'a masterpiece?the definitive juveniledelinquency novel and a damning indictment of our criminal justice system,' is considered a classic. His novel A Couple of Comedians is thought by some the best novel about Hollywood ever written. He was a close friend of Evan Connell and other San Francisco writers, but his closest friendship was with Richard Brautigan, and when Brautigan killed himself, Carpenter tried for some time to write a biography of his remarkable, deeply troubled friend. He finally abandoned that in favor of writing a novel. Friday's at Enricos, the story of four writers living in Northern California and Portland during the early, heady days of the Beat scene. A time of youth and opportunity, this story mixes the excitement of beginning with the melancholy of ambition, often thwarted and never satisfied. Loss of innocence is only the first price you pay. These are people, men and women, tender with expectation, at risk and in love, and Carpenter also carefully draws a portrait of these two remarkable places, San Francisco and Portland, in the 50s and early 60s, when the writers and bohemians were busy creating the groundwork for what came to be the counterculture.A great champion of Don Carpenter, Jonathan Lethem, has taken on the task of editing and developing this last draft into the shape we imagine Carpenter would have himself accomplished had he lived to see this through. And Lethem provides a wonderful introduction to this book, to Carpenter, and to the broad influence of his work which resonates until this very day.

Don Carpenter s first book published in 1966 and perhaps the novel for which he is most well know. His novels were not read, at the time, by wide audiences and to support himself he wrote screenplays in Hollywood including the Rip Torn Film, Payday which was filmed in 1972. Carpenter s books depicted the seedy, marginal characters, such as pool sharks, criminals, drug dealers, and taken from his time in Hollywood, movie moguls. Critics and writers alike, praised his work and he was best friends with fellow writer Richard Brautigan, who tragically took his own life in 1984. Eerily, Carpenter would himself, commit suicide after facing increasing illness and debilitating health issues in 1995. . No Binding. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Goddess by Philip Whalen. Broadside poem published on fine paper by Don Carpenter and printed by The Auerhahn Press in 1964. 1 page, 1/125 printed and 25 signed (no priority given). Accompanying this broadside, is a postcard written by Don Carpenter, who was still unknown in 1962 to then Harper and Row executive, Frank Scioscia (who would later found RiverRun Books). In the postcard, Carpenter cuts to the chase, asking what can you and I and H&R do about publishing a volume of poetry by Philip Whalen? He is an important (may I say major?) poet and publishers don t seem to want to publish poets no matter how wealthy they (the publishers, not the poets) get off the textbooks and trade garbage - - I think it is about time a major house brought out complete poems of Whalen, Snyder, etc. The card is signed Don at the close. Harper never did publish his work, however its worth noting that Harcourt and Brace, who published Carpenter s first novel in 1966, DID publish On Bear s Head in 1969 when Carpenter worked at least in some capacity with editor Dan Wickenden. (see my earlier post with Carpenter s letter to Frances McCullough). This broadside was published 2 years after the postcard to Scioscia, likely with the, I ll do it myself mindset. Carpenter was a champion for Whalen, Snyder, Lew Welch and Richard Brautigan, and likely did more for their careers than his own. . A fabulous association and a perfect pairing. Carpenter s signature is in fact, relatively uncommon as he has had more fame after his death, than when he was alive. Perfect for framing. . #doncarpenter #philipwhalen #garysnyder #poetry #poets #beatwriters #beatgeneration #portland #portlandoregon #oregon #westcoastbeats #jackkerouac #bookcollection #bookcollector #bookshop #bookstore #books4ewe #bookish #harperandrow #riverrunbooks #rarebooks #bibliophile #bookstagram #igbooks #igbookseller #instabooks #bookish #hardrainfalling #bookphoto #booktok #books. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. **Rarity Alert** . Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter. Exceptionally rare Uncorrected Proof made even more scarce by the signature and inscription by Carpenter on the half title page, For D.M.A With Love and Splendor and then signed by the author. . This is Carpenter s first novel published by Harcourt and Brace in 1966. His novels were not read, at the time, by wide audiences and to support himself he wrote screenplays in Hollywood including the Rip Torn Film, Payday which was filmed in 1972. Carpenters books depicted the seedy, marginal characters, such as pool sharks, criminals, drug dealers, and taken from his time in Hollywood, movie moguls. . Critics and writers alike, praised his work and he was best friends with fellow writer Richard Brautigan, who tragically took his own life in 1984. This was said to haunt Carpenter. Eerily, Carpenter would himself, commit suicide after facing increasing illness and debilitating health issues in 1995. . More recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in his body of work and most notably, this novel, his first, which I have to say even after reading it 5 years ago sticks with me to this day. I think he is one of the greatest forgotten voices from the 60 s - 70 s . Please leave your thoughts in the comments about this novel and other Carpenter works! . . First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Books signed by Carpenter are rare. Don Carpenterâs Hard Rain Falling is a tough-as-nails account of being down and out, but never down for goodâ"a Dostoyevskian tale of crime, punishment, and the pursuit of an ever-elusive redemption. âHard Rain Falling is a unique read; violent, tender, inexorable, and melancholic; a beat-era book of disaffected young men devoid of On the Road euphoria but more poignant and gripping for its fatalistic grounding. The small lives contained herein are indelible" (Richard Price).
