La trame fondamentale du roman est faite de la vie de Jean-Christophe ''musicien, fils de musicien qui naît dans une petite ville de Rhénanie''. L'Aube, Le matin, L'adolescence, La révolte forment les quatre premiers livres du récit. Exemplaire en très bonne condition.

Avec ce roman l'auteur obtint le Prix Femina en 1905, et lui permit probablement d'obtenir le Prix Nobel de littérature en 1915. Il est ici illustré par son ami Frans MASEREEL, de plus de 500 bois originaux, dont 5 frontispices et des hors-texte. Tirage limité à 2010 exemplaires numérotés, celui-ci est l'un des 400 exemplaires numérotés en chiffres romains sur Madagascar (après 10 Japon et 100 Hollande).
