Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Hefner, the Playboy of the Western World, was a visionary publisher, an empire-builder, an avatar of pleasure, and a pajama-clad pipe-smoker with a pre-coital grin. In 1953, he published his first edition of Playboy, with Marilyn Monroe on the cover and her nude calendar inside. He obtained the rights for $500 with money borrowed from his puritanical Nebraska-born mother. In addition to his role as a 'tasteful pornographer,' Hef became a cultural warrior, fighting government censorship all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court after the Post Office refused to deliver his magazine to its subscribers. As the years and his notoriety progressed, he became an advocate of abortion, LGBT equality, and the legalization of pot. Eventually, he engaged in 'pubic wars' with Bob Guccione, founder of Penthouse, which cut into Hefs sales. During his heyday, some of the biggest male stars in Hollywood, including Warren Beatty, Sammy Davis, Jr., Mick Jagger, and Jack Nicholson, came to frolic behind Hefs guarded walls, stripping nude in the hot tube grotto before sampling the rotating beds upstairs. This ground-breaking biography, the latest in Blood Moons string of outrageously unvarnished myth-busters, is the first published since Hefners death at the age of 91 in 2017. It is a provocative saga, rich in tantalizing, often shocking detail definitely not for the sanctimonious or the faint of heart. NOTE: BECAUSE OF THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF THIS BOOK, ADDITIONAL POSTAGE MAY BE REQUIRED IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE US OR REQUIRE PRIORITY MAIL WITHIN THE U.S. XX With over 200 photographs of young movie stars on the verge of stardom, infamous Court TV celebrities, Vietnamese, young males, South Africans, young wrestlers, troubled youth with animals, boy scouts, and others, this book was published to coincide with the exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from November 20, 1997, to February 8, 1998. [From the Bruce Weber website] The title refers to a story of some wild-child teenagers he met in Montana, who in an act of teenage bonding had branded each other on the shoulder with the heated blade of an army bayonet. The reckless romance of this band-of-brothers fable sets the tone for the photographs of this volume?images that evoke youth, freedom, adventure?and the ties that bind. This book opens with a portfolio of Hollywood?s brightest lights, actors of todays? A-list like Leonardo diCaprio, Christina Ricci, Natalie Portman and Mark Wahlberg, all caught at the moment just before their biggest breaks. There?s a fearlessness in these images, an uninhibited spirit, a glimpse from the brink of fame. Their innocence stands in stark contrast to the ?Court TV? chapter that follows, Polaroid stills from the time when cable crime reportage became a national fixation, the lurid underbelly of fame represented by the Menendez brothers, Amy Fisher, and Lorena Bobbitt. Branded Youth is very much concerned with a search for lost innocence, that big fantasy life only dangerous because of its elusiveness. The book traces Bruce?s travels and adventures over the course of several years, from Vietnam to South Africa, Mississippi to Montana. Everywhere he witnesses and documents families celebrating together, children, elderly folks, life-long friends, enchanted landscapes. The prevailing feeling is of possibility and love and faith, the desire people share to build communities and live in harmony with one another, regardless of the injustice or violence of the past. In these photographs, Bruce captures an openness to life as it presents itself to his lens?the pictures resonate, above all, with hope. Branded Youth and Other Stories features lyrics by Sammy Cahn, Gilbert Keith Chesterton, and Patti Smith; poems by Charles Bukowski, A. E. Houseman and Allen Ginsberg; and essays by Ingrid Sischy, Martin Harrison, and Charles Saumarez Smith.

Softcover. Condition: Good. December, 1957 issue of Male Point of View featuring a cover photo of mid-century pin-up model, sometime film and TV and actress and ultimately tragic figure June McCall - an iconic example of Hollywood's early exploitation of beautiful women. At 17, McCall was a Vargas Girl, later the focus of over 300 cheesecake cover photos occasionally snapped by legendary photographers such as Andre de Dienes, Bernard of Hollywood, Earl Moran, Tom Kelley, et al, occasional B movie actress (notably in the SF camp classic Queen of Outer Space), frequent TV guest and chronic alcoholic, getting outrageously drunk at her first wedding and continuing to drink heavily throughout her short life, ultimately dying at the age of 55 from alcoholic liver disease in a Van Nuys, California hospital. Generally, McCall passed up few opportunities to put herself into a position of being seen. By her own admission, she said, "I want to be a great actress. That's why I'll pose in anything they want me to, as long as it gets my name in the papers." McCall was best known for her striking red hair tumbling in curls to her shoulders, her turquoise eyes, a perfect figure (36-26-36), a constitutional distaste for posing nude and her signature fish net stockings. Of special note in this issue are two articles, "A Barefoot Guide [for boys] to Sex With Women" and "Name Dropping Is His Business," the latter featuring legendary Hollywood agent Henry Wilson, who assembled a stable of gay actors as clients, including Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter. 68 pp. 6" x 4 1/4". Tight, unmarked copy with light shelf wear and faint crease to upper right corner of front panel. A presentable copy of a collectible mid-century cheesecake publication. Photographs of or additional information about this item are available on request. All inquiries answered promptly.
