Item Description: Grossett & Dunlap, New York, 1934. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Illustrated by Nat Falk (illustrator). 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Written by Howard Garis (under the Stratemeyer Syndicate "Appleton" pseudonym), this appears to be the true first edition of the next-to-last entry in the original series. Unpriced front flap lists 36 Swifts through "Television Detector" but NOT this title (as is also true of the REVERSE of the dust jacket, which also lists 9 Nancy Drews through "Twisted Candles" -- 1933.) Verso of title page lists 37 Swifts, through "Ocean Airport." DJ rear panel offers 12 Don Sturdy Books through "Don Sturdy in the Temples of Fear." Book is very good; will close its own text block and boards. The corners are NOT rubbed through, although there is slight discoloration to the bottom inch of the orange cloth covering of the rear board, where it was once damp.(Dampness did NOT penetrate to text block.) Glossy frontispiece; no internals. Original DJ is "good" with moderate chipping to corners and a noticeable dampstain to bottom inch or two of rear panel and rear flap. 214 pp. followed by seven pp. of ads which again list 36 Swifts through "Television Detector"; 12 Hardy Boys through "Footprints Under the Window" (1933), and 16 Ted Scott Flying Stories through "Battling the Wind" (1933.) This is the G&D original, NOT some Whitman reprint, NOT ex-library -- pages are flexible and show only minimal age-toning. The story lines by this time seem as dated as the endpapers, with their boxy biplanes and 1917-era tanks. Why the world needs Tom's segmented wooden airstrip, adrift in the North Atlantic, is unclear, as is the question of why the "Haargolanders" (who despite the Scandinavian moniker appear to be a bunch of Mexican Communists) would want to seize the thing. Oh well. Reduced from $425. A NOTE TO OUR OVERSEAS CUSTOMERS: On Books valued over $200, we recommend (though we do not require) overseas buyers choose "Priority" shipping, as this includes some automatic insurance coverage. The book was published by Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers in 1931 and appears to be a First Edition though it's not specifically stated as such. (It is last-listed on the copyright page and it has the appropriate 1931 date as well.) It's not an ex-library copy, is in good + condition, and it has no dust jacket. There is a bookstamp of one previous owner pasted to the front paste down end page, and the name of another previous owner written on the front loose end page. Like most of these older Nancy Drew hard covers I'm betting that the spine IS getting brittle. I've been very careful in my handling of it. The book is 5 1/4" by 7 5/8" and has 204 pages with some black-and-white illustrations/plates. It also has light blue boards with gold print bordered by black on the front board and pure black print on the spine. Thank you!. Bookseller Inventory # 008656
