Paperback. Condition: Good. Here are 25 stories of science fiction that push the envelope, by the biggest names in an emerging new crop of high-tech futuristic SF - including Charles Stross, Robert Reed, Alastair Reynolds, Peter Hamilton and Neal Asher. High-tech SF has made a significant comeback in the last decade, as bestselling authors successfully blend the super-science of 'hard science fiction' with real characters in an understandable scenario. It is perhaps a reflection of how technologically controlled our world is that readers increasingly look for science fiction that considers the fates of mankind as a result of increasing scientific domination. This anthology brings together the most extreme examples of the new high-tech, far-future science fiction, pushing the limits way beyond normal boundaries. The stories include: "A Perpetual War Fought Within a Cosmic String", "A Weapon That Could Destroy the Universe", "A Machine That Detects Alternate Worlds and Creates a Choice of Christs", "An Immortal Dead Man Sent To The End of the Universe", "Murder in Virtual Reality", "A Spaceship So Large That There is An Entire Planetary System Within It", and "An Analytical Engine At The End of Time", and "Encountering the Untouchable.". The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Dolensky, David (illustrator). Hardcover. Age range 6 to 9Featuring quirky, vintage-inspired illustrations, this charming story tells the tale of a cat moving to a new island home, where things take an unexpected turn. When a curious cat named Tibbles and her owner move across the world from England to a new home on a small island off the coast of New Zealand in 1894, everything seems idyllic at first. Then things go horribly wrong. In this charming little story, the oblivious, amusing hero, Tibbles, discovers a rare species of flightless bird that had never previously been described the Stephens Island wren. Unfortunately, Tibbles also becomes the cause of the birds extinction by preying on them.Beneath the surface of this whimsically told story is a sophisticated tragicomic plot with a foundation in Greek tragedy. Tibbless killing of the Stephens Island wrens led to the eventual extinction of the entire species, and the tragedy is heightened by the fact that Tibbles was not a malicious or malevolent creature, but rather a normal cat behaving according to its instincts. To add insult to injury, Tibbles is not only innocent and ignorant about the effects of her actions; she is also silly, care-free, and wildly unconcerned. This book presents a true story in a subtly comedic light, but the underlying tragedy is still present, emphasizing the unintended consequences of human actions on the environment.Ultimately, the tale of Tibbles the cat had a silver lining it brought global awareness to the dangers of introducing non-native animal species to other continents. Beautifully illustrated in a vintage style, with heavy graphic novel elements, this quirky, captivating tale will take readers on an emotional, darkly funny journey of discovery and consequence, all while teaching valuable lessons about the environment and the human impact on it. The book also includes interesting facts about the Stephens Island wren and its discovery.Tibbles the Cat is perfect for children aged 69 inclined towards funny stories and deep lessons. Through this unique, engaging, and darkly comedic story, kids will be entertained as they learn about history and conservation, with humor being the sugar that helps the environmentalist medicine go down. Laughing one moment and considering serious issues the next, children will learn about the impact of humans on animal species and the importance of protecting wildlife.'A great story that mixes the story of discoveries and of a cat in New Zealand in XIX I liked the drawings and think it deals with an important issue like introducing new species in an enviroment Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine' Anna Maria Giacomasso, Librarian'A charming and fun story about a cat and his owner that discover a rare species of bird and accidentally leads to the extinction of said rare bird. This was a neat story that was both funny and has a deep lesson. The artwork is giving a cozy and fun tone and the story itself was unique.' Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When their second child, Alexander, is diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, doctors tell Ashley Bristowe and her husband that the boy won't walk, or even talk- that he is profoundly disabled. Stunned and reeling, Ashley researches a disorder so new it's just been named - Kleefstra Syndrome - and she finds little hope and a maze of obstacles. Then she comes across the US-based 'Institutes,' which have been working to improve the lives of brain-injured children for decades. Recruiting volunteers, organizing therapy, juggling a million tests and appointments, even fundraising as the family falls deep into debt, Ashley devotes years of 24/7 effort to running an impossibly rigorous diet and therapy programme for their son with the hope of saving his life, and her own. The ending is happy: he will never be a 'normal' boy, but Alexander talks, he walks, he swims, he plays the piano (badly) and he goes to school. This victory isn't clean and it's far from pretty; the personal toll on Ashley is devastating. 'It takes a village,' people say, but too much of their village is uncomfortable with her son's difference, the therapy regimen's demands and the family's bottomless need. The health and provincial services bureaucracy gives them a maddening set of hoops to jump through, displaying criminally low expectations about what they can do to help. My Own Blood is an uplifting story, but it never shies away from the devastating impact of a baby that science couldn't predict and medicine couldn't help. It's the story of a woman who lost everything she'd once been - a professional, an optimist, a joker, a capable adult - in sacrifice to her son. An honest account of a woman's life turned upside down. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

A first edition, with "Published September, 1903" and "Copyright, 1903" on its copyright page, and "LITTLE, BROWN, AND COMPANY"/"1903" on its title page. This book, which has no jacket, is in surprisingly good condition for a 121 year old survivor. Its binding is still sound, though marred by spine lean. The gilt titles on its spine are slightly faded but unworn. The red, black, and white embossed image on its front cover is marred by a short thin black mark in the author's name, plus some light foxing, but is otherwise bright and attractive. Its covers are marred by some faint foxing, plus light wear on its spine ends and corners, but otherwise unworn. The pages are unworn, with some normal light toning, with faint foxing and light wear on edges and corners. The fragile bound-in tissue paper protecting the frontpiece art has some light foxing, but is still whole and unmarked. There are three former owner marks in the book. Pasted on its front endpaper is a piece of paper cut from a lined tablet page, on which is written in an elegant script, "From Ethel, to Manly / Dec. 1913". Written in ink inside its front cover is "Childs" (presumably the name of a bookstore.) And, charmingly, impressed between its two front endpapers is a four-leaf clover, which has obviously been there for many years since it has left a foxed image of the clover on the endpapers. I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its new owner in the same condition as my description.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Lacey has been awake for four hundred and twentynine years. Created by an immortal father and human mother, Lacey and her brother, Damien, are outcasts who do not belong to either world. Although Damien has easily adjusted to his ever-changing life, Lacey wants nothing more than to break free from her immortal ways. Little does she know that all of that is about to change. After years of alternating between countries, Lacey and Damien now live in Michigan, where for three years they have been in hiding. Just as Damien reveals to Lacey that they are both extraordinarily powerful and never should have been born, Lacey meets Scarlett Jenxon, a seemingly normal girl who is about to help her discover the true meaning of being an immortal descendant-to be a guardian of gifted humans. Scarlett is on the run from the Bortilo, living bodies of the damned who steal souls. Unable to turn to the immortals for help, Lacey, Damien, and a band of friends embark on a dangerous quest to destroy the Bortilo before the balance for good is extinguished forever. In this gripping fantasy tale, secrets are revealed and sacrifices made as Lacey and Damien soon discover that doing the right thing sometimes means rebelling against what they once desired most of all.
