Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. Sleeve and 2 VHS tapes in good condition. Full Screen format.Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi.

Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. With a traveling photography studio of their own invention and a generous supply of determination and patience, this German photographer and writer team traversed Africa and South Asia in search of people living apart from an increasingly materialistic world. Gnter Pfannmller and Wilhelm Klein discovered what they have described as a form of dignity that will soon be extinct. Their photographs unveil a resonant humanity in the faces, postures, and elaborate dress of people whose traditions and strong sense of material culture afford them complete self-possession. The acclaimed scientist, anthropologist, and writer Wade Davis contributes a preface in which his twenty-five years of experience studying indigenous cultures establishes an intellectual foreground for this intimate record. Essay by Wilhelm Klein. Preface by Wade Davis. Dust jacket scuffed, lamination peeling from bottom front. Book itself in very good condition. Wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector.

FROM THE PUBLISHER - Expert at documenting the peoples of the world, National Geographic has drawn together a notable international team of anthropologists to compile this first-of-its-kind, illustrated volume of the traditions and ways of life of ethnic groups around the globe. Now, as never before, cultures are faced with extinction as globalization overtakes them. But Peoples of the World offers compelling essays and stunning photographs that capture the astounding array of cultures still surviving on Earth and shows how the people in these cultures define themselves and their worlds through their customs, religions, livelihoods, even their food, clothes, and shelter. The book will feature chapters on eight world regions: North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Oceania, and the Arctic. Each region will begin with an insightful general essay on the cultural mix of the region as a whole and will be followed by smaller essays on individual ethnic groups within the region. Several topical essays by well-known anthropologists will also cover ethnicity and its impact on history and people's lives; immigration and how it reinvents ethnic identities, and cultural survival of marginal ethnic groups now threatened with extinction. Extensive, specially commissioned maps will show the topography of small areas of the world and how the lay of the land has impacted cultures. A comprehensive list of the hundreds of ethnic groups in the world and where they are found will be part of the front matter. inventory #34779.

A native Californian living in the northern Sierra Nevada near Taylorsville, California, Carr began photographing and color printing professionally in 1979 after seeking advice and inspiration from his mentor and neighbor, pioneering 20th century master landscape and conservation photographer Philip Hyde. Credits include a US Postal Service stamp of Acadia National Park and numerous exhibit format books. Clifton has spent thirty-five years exploring and documenting endangered, wild landscapes, creating an immense body of work with a large format 4x5 film camera, and more recently a digital camera. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In 1941 Richard Evans Schultes took a term's leave of absence from Harvard University and disappeared into the north west Amazon of Colombia. Twelve years later, he returned having gone places no outsider had ever been, mapping uncharted rivers and living among two dozen Indian tribes while collecting some thirty thousand botanical specimens, including two thousand novel medicinal plants and three hundred species new to science. The greatest Amazonian botanical explorer of the twentieth century, Schultes was not only a living link to the great naturalists of the Victorian age, but the world authority on toxic, medicinal and hallucinogenic plants. The Lost Amazon is the first major publication to examine Richard Evans Schultes's work through his photographs. Over the course of two decades, he took more than ten thousand images of plants, of landscapes, and of the indigenous peoples with whom he lived. Among his collection are images of teonanacatl, the sacred hallucinogenic mushrooms knows to the Aztecs as Flesh of the Gods, and whose identification sparked the psychdelic era. There are also photographs from the heart of the rain forest, a mantle of green that once stretched across the entire continent. Most importantly, there are portraits of many people never before photographed, lovingly and respectfully captured in moments of unguarded innocence that reflect his deep relationships with the native peoples. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
