Juni 2023 in Berlin) war ein Schweizer Philosoph mit Beiträgen insbesondere zur Analytischen Philosophie, Erkenntnistheorie und Ethik. Sein Buch zur Freiheit des Willens erreichte auch eine sehr große nichtfachliche Leserschaft. Ab 1995 wurde er unter dem Pseudonym Pascal Mercier vor allem als Autor von fünf literarischen Werken bekannt. Besonders erfolgreich war der Roman Nachtzug nach Lissabon. Leben: Bieri legte die Matura am Berner Gymnasium Kirchenfeld ab und studierte Philosophie, Anglistik und Indologie in London und Heidelberg. Dort promovierte er 1971 bei Dieter Henrich und Ernst Tugendhat mit einer Arbeit zur Zeit, in der er sich umfassend mit der Zeiterfahrung des englischen Philosophen John McTaggart Ellis McTaggart beschäftigte. Es folgten Studien an der University of California, Berkeley, der Harvard University, dem Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin und dem Van Leer Institut in Jerusalem. 1983 wurde er nach Bielefeld berufen. Danach arbeitete Bieri als wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Philosophischen Seminar der Universität Heidelberg. Bieri war Mitbegründer des Forschungsschwerpunktes Kognition und Gehirn der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Die Schwerpunkte seiner Forschung sind Philosophische Psychologie, Erkenntnistheorie und Moralphilosophie. Von 1990 bis 1993 war er Professor für Geschichte der Philosophie an der Universität Marburg; ab 1993 lehrte Peter Bieri Philosophie an der Freien Universität Berlin am Lehrstuhl für Sprachphilosophie als Nachfolger von Ernst Tugendhat. Im Jahr 2007 zog sich Bieri vorzeitig in den akademischen Ruhestand zurück, verärgert über den Universitätsbetrieb. . Am bekanntesten ist Bieris Buch Das Handwerk der Freiheit mit der Kernthese: Auch wenn die Naturgesetze bestimmen, was wir tun und denken, können wir uns unter Berücksichtigung der jedem Menschen gegebenen Bedingtheiten als frei verstehen. Frei sind wir in diesem Sinne genau dann, wenn wir unseren eigenen Überzeugungen gemäß handeln können. Ein solcher Freiheitsbegriff, der ein bewusstes Reflektieren und eine bewusste Entscheidung voraussetzt, aber auch für möglich hält, steht nicht im Gegensatz zum Determinismus. Die Idee einer "absoluten Freiheit", die gegen den Determinismus gerichtet ist, ist begrifflich inkohärent. In dem Aufsatz "Was macht das Bewußtsein zu einem Rätsel?" argumentiert Peter Bieri gegen die Idee, dass die Neurowissenschaften das Phänomen "Bewusstsein" erklärt hätten. Auch wenn wir immer mehr über die neuronalen Korrelate von Bewusstsein erfahren, so wissen wir dennoch nicht, warum diese Prozesse von Bewusstsein begleitet sind. Bieris Argumentation ähnelt hier der von Thomas Nagel, Joseph Levine und David Chalmers.
