Octavo, hardcover (slick, map illus. black boards), 278 pp. Fine. From lower cover: In this challenging book Anita Prazmowska examines, from an Eastern European perspective, Eastern Europe's apparent political and military failures in the face of Nazi aggression. Until now, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Romania and the Baltic States have generally been seen as powerless victims. Prazmowska suggests an alternative view, namely seeing them as states which had to grapple with complex economic, political and military dilemmas. To many in the region, British and French indifference was nearly as dangerous as German, Italian and Soviet interference. Otherwise inexplicable conundrums of Czechoslovak passivity in 1938, Polish bullishness in the face of British offers of aid in 1939, and the perception that the Romanian king was too cunning for his own good, are tackled -- and the states from the Baltic to the Balkans are given their place in European history, and, in particular, in the study of the Second World War. European History, World War II, WWII, Second World War yslic.

Condition: Good. Present are 8 volumes of a possible 10 volume set; because volume 1 is missing, bibliographical information is scant. It is a beautiful edition, half-bound in leather with gold-veined marbled boards, TEG and gilt lettering on spines, but it is not the "Deluxe" limited ed. of 1908. Gauffered edges suggest it to be a kind of first ed. The volumes are not numbered on spine or within. The titles in the first un-numbered volume, chosen as first because of frontis. portrait of the author, are: "'Virginibus Puerisque' and Other Papers," "Memories and Portraits," and "Familiar studies of Men and Books; " the next volume comprises: "Treasure Island," and "Black Arrow;" the next is entitled, "The Wrecker;" next comes "An Inland Voyage'" "Travels With A Donkey," "The Amateur Emigrant," "The Silverado Squatters," and "Across the Plains with Other Memories and Essays," the next volume includes "St. Ives," "The Misadventures of John Nicholson," "The Story of a Lie," and "The Body Snatcher;" the following contains "The Wrong Box," "Island Nights Entertainments," and The Ebb-Tide," co-authored with Lloyd Osbourne; the next volume features "The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables," "Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," and "Prince Otto"--frontis. is photo showing Richard Mansfield in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," dated 1908; the last volume extant comprises "The Master of Ballantrae," "Weir of Hermiston," and "Poems." The bindings of all volumes are firm; the paper of fine quality, strong and only mildly age-toned with no foxing; there is some bumping of corners and rubbing at the crowns and feet of the spines, with an occasional scrape or ding; the only ill. are the frontispieces, which are usually reproductions of paintings depicting a scene in one of the stories.
