Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Photographs (illustrator). Film comedy in the sound era has probably never again scaled the heights it did in the thirties and early forties- the period discussed with knowledge and affection in this masterly new study by Donald W. McCaffrey. There were Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, and Joe E. Brown. The great silent comedians like Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd, still featured in well-loved films and sophisticated entertainments like Easy Living and Nothing Sacred, introduced a whole new vein of comedy. What other decade could boast these riches along with such personalities as Mac West, Myrna Loy and William Powell, Clark Gable and Constance Bennett, Shirley Temple, and Mickey Rooney's Andy Hardy? This book, then, is a mine of nostalgia for those who lived through the period, or who have only recently discovered its laughs and chuckles through revivals on television. It was a time when, despite the depression, film-makers knew how to create humor in a staggering variety of ways-via the musicals of Busby Berkeley, the fantasy of The Wizard of Oz, the cartoons of Wait Disney like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as well as the screwball comedies and the hilarious, side-splitting antics of teams like the Marxes and Stan and Ollie. Some 170 illustrations recapture the pleasure and skill of this period of great talent, and Mr. McCaffrey's work is as readable as it is scholarly, the perfect companion to the comedies themselves. About the Author - Dr. Donald W. McCaffrey, author of Four Great Comedians: Chaplin, Lloyd, Keaton and Langdon, and Focus on Chaplin, is Associate Professor of English at the University of North Dakota. He specializes in cinema and dramatic literature. He received his Ph.D. in 1962 from the University of Iowa, with one of the first intensive analyses of a cinema comedian: an evaluation of three feature films starring Harold Lloyd. McCaffrey has been active in the promotion of film scholarship with the international organization, The Society for Cinema Studies. He has served as secretary and councilman for the group. In 1965 he interviewed Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton to develop several of his major studies. He has created a research method that examines a comic film in detail by studying visual and verbal humor through the use of a motion picture editing viewer and recording equipment. He is the author of a number of articles on silent and sound screen comedy that have been published in Britain and the United States. Book.

The adventure, romance, and pathos that were so much a part of the silent serial during the early years of the motion picture industry have vanished from the scene of the Hollywood movie studio. The present generation neither remembers - for none was yet born - nor cares; for to them the silent serial is but a small part of the American past which might never even have existed. But to those who themselves were growing up in the pre-talkie era, when the motion picture industry itself was just beginning to unfold its wings, the silent serial was an outlet for the fancies of children and the dreams of adults. It was an action-packed, thrill-a-minute entry into the world of exciting experiences. Bound and Gagged is the story of the silent serial: its birth; its growth; its heroes and heroines; its successes and failures; and finally its demise. Author Kalton Lahue takes you behind the scenes, into the studios, to show you how the serials were made. The operations of the famous studios that produced these serials - Pathe, Universal, Vitagraph, Rayart and Mascot - are fascinatingly explained and discussed in detail. What was the industry thinking behind the thrilling episodes? How did writers create the thrill-a-minute scenarios? Did serial directors function difFerently from their feature counterparts? All these questions and more are answered fully in the captivating text. Within the pages of Bound and Gagged serials come alive once more as Spencer G. Bennet, Robert F. Hill, Frank Leon Smith, Ford Beebe, Louise Lorraine, and others reveal the past in personal interviews. Here the reader will find the only career study of Charles Hutchinson and Eddie Polo, and long-obscured facts about many fabulous serial people. Hundreds of illustrations bring back the excitement and drama of The Jungle Goddess, The Fortieth Door, The Vanishing Dagger, The Green Archer, The Adventures of Tarzan, and many, many others. Bound and Gagged is unique in that there are no other books on the market to compare with its content. It is a monumental work, which recreates the magic of an era and an industry that somehow only lives in the memories of those who will never forget the thrill of a silent serial. ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Born and educated in Richford, Vermont, Kalton C. Lahue became interested in motion pictures at an early age. Living next door to the Park Theater, he practically grew up in a theater seat and later worked as projectionist and assistant manager. Transferring to active duty from reserve status during the Korean War, he was assigned to the Signal School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, and then sent overseas as a combat photographer in Korea. After his discharge in 1955, he enrolled at the University of Vermont to study history and became interested in silent movies for their historical value. In attempting to learn all he could about the early days of pictures, he found reference material both scanty and conflicting so he decided to write his own book. An ex-history teacher, he holds an M.A. from San Jose State College and has served as Director of Educational Resources Project at Johnson State College, Johnson, Vermont, as well as Director of the Instructional Materials Center in Springfield, Vermont. The past three years, he has worked as an educational consultant and free-lance script writer, in addition to writing three previous books-Continued Next Week, World of Laughter, and Kops and Custard. He is married and has one child. Book.

The faces and voices of Eve Arden, Agnes Moorehead, Angela Lansbury, Thelma Ritter. and Eileen Heckart are familiar to many people, but how many star-watchers could match the name to the performer? These five women are celebrated for their fine 'supporting character' roles, but often the public is ill-acquainted with them as people. In Good Dames experienced film writer-researcher-historian James Robert Parish delves into the careers of these extraordinary women, providing new insight into their professional and personal lives. Each of the five women has a full chapter devoted to her, and each chapter contains a detailed filmography with cast, credits, and character names. Fully captioned photographs add to the nostalgia and fun of identifying these 'good dames' in some of show business's best roles. In addition, the author provides a complete survey of each actress's stage, radio, and television careers, with reviews of these ventures and quotations by the women themselves. Although these ladies have been seen for many years in films and on television, this is the first book to study and appraise their work in depth. They are among the most highly respected and best paid character players in show business, yet often they have not received the critical attention or publicity of less talented actresses. Mr. Parish is the author of several other highly praised books on film and film personalities. With Good Dames he has paid tribute to five great actresses who have demonstrated considerable versatility in their long spans of show business work. Too often their performances have been sloughed off by critics as being either 'typical' or 'good as usual,' but rarely has an attempt been made to analyze their work. Mr. Parish has ferreted beneath the surface to portray these ladies as the super professionals they are. Slight bumping to top and bottom of spine. Book.
