The struggles of the Israelis and Palestinians - with their terrible histories of disaster and redemption - command the obsessive attention of the world. Statesmen tinker with peace plans for the Middle East and generals worry about future wars there. Religious leaders stoke the violent passions of the devout while pilgrims flock to find God and archaeologists dig to find the origins of His revelations. All this goes on under the watchful eye of an army of reporters, observers, diplomatic envoys, and aid workers. Between the Mediterranean and the Jordan River, dreams and ideals collide with the reality of violent nationalist struggle, and God's name is invoked in defense of the jealousies of men. With the experienced journalist's eye for irony, anecdote, and telling detail, Anton La Guardia offers an intimate look into the Israelis as they come to terms with the "post-Zionist" demolition of national myths, and the Palestinians as they try to build their own state. A classic in the making, WAR WITHOUT END is the definitive book on Israel and her people. As new, unread, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket.{Not remainder-marked or price-clipped} NF12.

Book First Edition
Trade paperback. Condition: Good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 10.75 inches. 96 pages. Illustrations (many in color). Scratch on rear cover. Includes Foreword by Jan C. Scruggs; In the Beginning by Maya Ying Lin; Preface: War and Memory; Contributors; Photo Credits; and Acknowledgments. In August of 1992, in anticipation of the tenth anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (November 13, 1992), LIFE magazine sent a group of 15 reporters, photographers, assistants, interns, and editors to put together its salute to the memorial. From dawn to dawn, LIFE's reporters and photographers documented an extraordinary procession of people. In it was pain, joy, lonesome tears, rain, darkness, and the welling up of memories as solid as the names engraved on the wall. Peter Meyer is a former News Editor of Life magazine and the author of numerous nonfiction books, including the critically acclaimed The Yale Murder and Death of Innocence. Over the course of his three-decade journalism career Meyer, who holds a masters degree in history from the University of Chicago, has touched down in cities around the globe, from Bennington to Baghdad, and has written hundreds of stories, on subjects as varied as anti-terrorist training for American ambassadors to the history of the 1040 income tax form. His work has appeared in such publications as Harper's, Vanity Fair, National Geographic, New York, Life, Time and People. Meyer also writes and edits for the American Enterprise Institute, the Manhattan Institute, and the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, where he is a Senior Visiting Fellow. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a 2-acre (8,093.71 m ) U.S. national memorial in Washington, D.C. It honors service members of the U.S. armed forces who fought in the Vietnam War, service members who died in service in Vietnam/South East Asia, and those service members who were unaccounted for during the war. Its construction and related issues have been the source of controversies, some of which have resulted in additions to the memorial complex. This is reflected in the fact that the Vietnam memorial is now made up of three parts: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, completed first and the best-known part of the memorial; The Three Soldiers; and the Vietnam Women's Memorial. The main part of the memorial, the wall of names, which was completed in 1982, is in Constitution Gardens adjacent to the National Mall, just northeast of the Lincoln Memorial. The memorial is maintained by the National Park Service, and receives around 3 million visitors each year. The Memorial Wall was designed by American architect Maya Lin. In 2007, it was ranked tenth on the "List of America's Favorite Architecture" by the American Institute of Architects. As a National Memorial, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The participating photographers are: Bill Eppridge, Frank Fournier, Lori Grinker, Charles Harbutt, Joe McNally and Christopher Morris. The contributing writers are: Naomi Cutner, David Ewing Duncan, Janet Mason, Sue Allison Massimiano, Sasha Nyary, Steven Petrow, Henry Sidel, and Stephanie Slewka.
