Condition: new. ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1975). (1940) 1975 3rd edition. 8vo (140 x 222mm). Ppxvi,240. B/w photograph plates, illustrations. Salmon boards, spine titled in gilt. Spotting to end-papers and edges else clean internally, smells slightly musty owing to long storage. Good copy in used dust-wrapper. Noel M. Sedgwick, then editor of The Shooting Times, gives good advice and instructions for the teenage reader. And, indeed, for anyone else who is interested in the subject. A whole genre of shooting books exists which deals with the new conditions prevailing after the Second World War. This book, published in 1942, is perhaps the first, since Sedgwick explains in his foreword that "since commencing to write this book, many and startling changes have overcome the shooting world, owing to the prosecution of the war. Almost in a night, it seems, the face of our island home has changed". And more was to come. Chapters include: Shooting to-day; Safety first; Guns and cartridges; How to shoot; Behaviour in the shooting field; The sportsman-naturalist; Vermin; Rooks and rook shooting; Trapping and snaring; Ferreting; Pigeon shooting 1; Pigeon shooting 2; Rough shooting; The grouse; The pheasant; The partridge; Snipe; The woodcock; The hare; The not-so-humble rabbit; Inland marshes; Wildfowling; Dogs and dog-training. A good read and still useful. .

This companion volume deals in the same comprehensive manner with all the more common flies found in stillwater, on our many lakes, lochs and reservoirs. It also provides extensive information on fishing methods, and the various techniques required to fish the many hundreds of artificial patterns listed. There are also over 130 superb colour photographs of natural flies taken by the author." .

"A milestone in angling literature". Tom Ivens' "Stillwater fly-fishing" and Clarke's "The pursuit of stillwater trout" marked the transition of stillwater trout fishing in Britain from traditional loch-style to modern imitative methods. This was really the first book to set out in a logical way the thought processes which led the author to be able to choose one fly in preference to another, knowing that he had made a reasoned and sensible choice. The novice, faced with a huge expanse of water, and without the experience of previous successes, lacks the confidence that a trout would want to eat his patently artificial lure. This book provides the reasoning for him to decide on fly pattern and method. .
