Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Try as they might, the Daemons of the Caves could not tempt old Santa Claus in any way. Quite the contrary, his cheery laughter disconcerted the evil ones and showed to them the folly of their undertaking. It's well known that no harm can come to Santa Claus while he is in the Laughing Valley, for the fairies, and ryls, and knooks all protect him. But on Christmas Eve he drives his reindeer out into the big world, carrying a sleighload of toys and pretty gifts to the children. Christmas Eve is the one time when his enemies have a chance to injure him. So the Daemons made their plans and awaited the arrival of Christmas Eve. Santa bridled his reindeer to the sleigh, and took to the air -- when suddenly a strange thing happened: a rope shot through the moonlight and a big noose that was in the end of it settled over the arms and body of Santa Claus and drew tight. Before he could resist or even cry out he was jerked from the seat of the sleigh and tumbled head foremost into a snowbank, while the reindeer rushed onward with the load of toys and carried it quickly out of sight and sound. Such a surprising experience confused old Santa for a moment, and when he had collected his senses he found that the wicked Daemons had pulled him from the snowdrift and bound him tightly with many coils of the stout rope. And then they carried the kidnapped Santa Claus away to their mountain, where they thrust the prisoner into a secret cave and chained him to the rocky wall so that he could not escape. 24 pp. Englisch.

A few flies buzzed about its flank, and it switched its tail. It sat. There was silence. 'It's a wub,' Peterson said. 'I got it from a native for fifty cents. He said it was a very unusual animal. Very respected.' 'This It's a pig! A huge dirty pig!' 'Yes sir, it's a pig. The natives call it a wub.' 'A huge pig. It must weigh four hundred pounds.' Franco grabbed a tuft of the rough hair. The wub gasped. Its eyes opened, small and moist. Then its great mouth twitched. A tear rolled down the wub's cheek and splashed on the floor. 'Maybe it's good to eat,' Peterson said nervously. 'We'll soon find out,' Franco said. 24 pp. Englisch.

No, really -- it's the story of a nose that leaves the face of an official in St. Petersburg (the Russian St. Petersburg, the one in Florida wasn't even a proper village when Gogol was alive). The nose leaves this man's face and wanders off to have a life of its own.It does strange stuff, too, What's to expect Seriously, it's a nose. In A History of Russian Literature, the critic D.S. Mirsky writes: 'The Nose is a piece of sheer play, almost sheer nonsense. In it more than anywhere else Gogol displays his extraordinary magic power of making great comic art out of nothing.' Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The setting is a society in which aging has been cured, individuals have indefinite lifespans and population control is used to limit the population of the United States to forty million. This is maintained through a combination of infanticide and government-assisted suicide - in short, in order for someone to be born, someone must first volunteer to die. As a result, births are few and far between, and deaths occur primarily by accident. Everything was perfectly swell. There were no prisons, no slums, no insane asylums, no cripples, no poverty, no wars. All diseases were conquered. So was old age. Death, barring accidents, was an adventure for volunteers. Never, never, never -- not even in medieval Holland nor old Japan -- had a garden been more formal, been better tended. Every plant had all the loam, light, water, air and nourishment it could use. A hospital orderly came down the corridor, and looked in at the mural and the muralist. 'Looks so real,' he said, 'I can practically imagine I'm standing in the middle of it.' 'What makes you think you're not in it ' said the painter. He gave a satiric smile. 'It's called 'The Happy Garden of Life,' you know.' 46 pp. Englisch.

'They pasted Moscow again last night.' Taylor nodded his head in approval. 'Gave it a real pounding. One of those R-H bombs. It's about time.' He sighed, drawing in the full comfort of the kitchen, the presence of his plump, attractive wife, the breakfast dishes and coffee. This was relaxation. And the war news was good, good and satisfying. He could feel a justifiable glow at the news, a sense of pride and personal accomplishment. After all, he was an integral part of the war program, not just another factory worker lugging a cart of scrap, but a technician, one of those who designed and planned the nerve-trunk of the war. 40 pp. Englisch.

WESTLAKE A SCIENCE FICTION WRITER Everyone knows him as the mystery writer who published books like The Hook (2000), Bad News 2001, and Put a Lid on It (2002) under his own name, Donald E. Westlake, and of course that he was also Richard Stark and a number of other favorite authors. But a science fiction writer -- Really -- You bet he was, early on in his career. (He even wrote one SF novel -- Anarchaos, in 1966, as 'Curt Clark.')He also wrote quite a bit of short SF, like this weird little SF mystery that first graced the pages of Amazing in 1963.It's an engaging little tale, set in a asteroid-belt colony: our hero is an investigator for an interplanetary insurance company, ferreting out the truth behind suspicious (and sometimes, uhm, otherworldly) insurance claims. . . . 60 pp. Englisch.

Woggle-Bug, became separated from his comrades who had accompanied him from the Land of Oz. Finding that time hung heavy on his hands -- and he had four of them! -- he decided to walk down the Main Street of the City and try to discover something-or-other of interest. So begins the adventures of the largest Woggle-Bug you have ever seen -- if you have ever seen even one -- in a thoroughly modern 1905 American city -- strutting down the street, his pink handkerchief in hand, his cane swirling . . . only to fall in love with the most stirringly enchanting beauty in a window! The Woggle-Bugs befuddled heart will lead him into a twisting series of adventures, from a ride in a balloon to run-ins with weasels -- and kings! It has long been one of the rarest items in the Baum bibliography. Baum's text has been controversial for its use of ethnic humor stereotypes. 52 pp. Englisch.

Therefore did they make men to live always in the air and in the sunlight, and in the light of the stars, that he would be reminded of them. And the Giants abode yet a while, and taught men to speak, and to write, and to weave, and to do many things which are needful to do, of which the writings speak. I could no longer distinguish the dream from the reality, nor could I discover where the reality began or where ended the dream! A wicked thought has been growing like a poisonous plant within her. 'The two of you must go to my grandmother who lives in the forest, and do everything she wants you to . . . and she will give you sweet things to eat, and you will be happy!'In the forest the obedient children find the hut -- and what a curious one it is! It stands on tiny hen's feet, and at the top is a rooster's head. With their tiny voices they call out: 'Izboushka, Izboushka! Turn thy back to the forest and thy front to us!' The hut does as they command. The two orphans look inside and see the witch resting there -- her head near the threshold, one foot in one corner, the other foot in another corner, and her knees quite close to the ridge pole. 'Why, my baby,' whispered Mrs. Bird in soft surprise, 'I had forgotten what day it was. You are a little Christmas child, and we will name you 'Carol' -- mother's little Christmas Carol!'Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923), author of such works as Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, Penelope's English Experiences and A Village Stradivarius, was one of America's most popular writers of books for young people. 88 pp. Englisch.

He was fourteen minutes behind time, and the throttle was wide open. In consequence, when he swung around the curve at the flower-bed, a wheel of his cart destroyed a peony. Number 36 slowed down at once and looked guiltily at his father, who was mowing the lawn. The doctor had his back to this accident, and he continued to pace slowly to and fro, pushing the mower. Jim dropped the tongue of the cart. He looked at his father and at the broken flower. Finally he went to the peony and tried to stand it on its pins, resuscitated, but the spine of it was hurt, and it would only hang limply from his hand. Jim could do no reparation. He looked again towards his father. He went on to the lawn, very slowly, and kicking wretchedly at the turf. Presently his father came along with the whirring machine, while the sweet, new grass blades spun from the knives. In a low voice, Jim said, 'Pa!' 114 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The question is often asked me whether Twinkle and Chubbins were asleep or awake when they encountered these wonderful adventures; and it grieves me to reflect that the modern child has been deprived of fairy tales to such an extent that it does not know -- as I did when a girl -- that in a fairy story it does not matter whether one is awake or not. You must accept it as you would a fragrant breeze that cools your brow, a draft of sweet water, or the delicious flavor of a strawberry, and be grateful for the pleasure it brings you, without stopping to question too closely its source. For my part I am glad if my stories serve to while away a pleasant hour before bedtime or keep one contented on a rainy day. In this way they are sure to be useful, and if a little tenderness for the helpless animals and birds is acquired with the amusement, the value of the tales will be doubled. If she had, Jimbo would never have met with the adventures that subsequently came to him. Thus, in a roundabout sort of way, the child ought to have been thankful to the governess; and perhaps, in a roundabout sort of way, he was. But that comes at the far end of the story, and is doubtful at best; and in the meanwhile the child had gone through his suffering, and the governess had in some measure expiated her fault; so that at this stage it is only necessary to note that the whole business began because the Empty House happened to be really an Empty House -- not the one Jimbo's family lived in, but another of which more will be known in due course. . . . 144 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nobody really wrote most of the stories. People told them in all parts of the world long before Egyptian hieroglyphics or Cretan signs or Cyprian syllabaries, or alphabets were invented. They are older than reading and writing, and arose like wild flowers before men had any education to quarrel over. The grannies told them to the grandchildren, and when the grandchildren became grannies they repeated the same old tales to the new generation. Homer knew the stories and made up the 'Odyssey' out of half a dozen of them. All the history of Greece till about 800 B.C. is a string of the fairy tales, all about Theseus and Heracles and Oedipus and Minos and Perseus is a Cabinet des Fées, a collection of fairy tales. Shakespeare took them and put bits of them into 'King Lear' and other plays; he could not have made them up himself, great as he was. Let ladies and gentlemen think of this when they sit down to write fairy tales, and have them nicely typed, and send them to Messrs. Longman & Co. to be published. They think that to write a new fairy tale is easy work. They are mistaken: the thing is impossible. Nobody can write a new fairy tale; you can only mix up and dress up the old, old stories, and put the characters into new dresses, as Miss Thackeray did so well in 'Five Old Friends.' If any big girl of fourteen reads this preface, let her insist on being presented with 'Five Old Friends.' 238 pp. Englisch.
