Insurgency in Northeast India is expected to be useful to all those who are involved in the peace processes in Northeast India because a problem of its magnitude cannot be solved without understanding the root causes. The book brings into focus that there is nothing like a north eastern insurgency and that there are several autonomous or isolated insurgencies militancies and other movements in different parts and ethnic areas of the region which have created an atmosphere of turmoil or an insurgent situation for the entire region. The roots of the problem vary from secessionism to demands for state or sub state within India or regional autonomy for ethnic areas within the states or protection of ethnic areas within the states or protection of ethnic and cultural identities. The economic and infrastructural backwardness unemployment and lack of opportunities seemed to be common causes in almost all cases. The single common cause that is emphasized most is the indifferent attitude of the central government which failed tackle the problem of insurgency at its initial stage and allowed the dominant majority to threaten the cultural identity of the ethnic and linguistic minorities and is responsible for economic and infrastructural backwardness of the region unemployment and lack of opportunities frustration and disappointment of the youths a sense of deprivation in the masses ethnic discrimination insecurity and threatened identity among the minorities and many other related problems. The study recommends that each insurgency or militancy or movement should be taken up separately and its root causes identified to uproot those and to dawn peace in the region. 136 pp.

This book begins with the meaning of child which generally means every human being who has not attained the age of 18 unless the state or national laws fix otherwise. Some instances where national laws have fixed the age of child more or less than 18 have been illustrated in this book. This book further contains among other things the international documents for the rights of the child namely the Geneva declaration of the rights of the child of 1924 the declaration of the rights of child of 1969 and the convention on the rights of the child 1989. The convention of 1989 is in the best interest of the child. The convention of 1989 provides whatever the freedoms and rights a child needs and the convention has brought together all the rights of the child described in many international instruments in one up to date. The Government of India not only acceded to the convention of 1989 on 11 December 1992 but the rights of the child prescribed in the convention of 1989 have become a part of the national laws of India by virtue of the Commission for Protection of Childs Rights 2005 made by the Parliament of India. The rights of the child and primary role of the family and parents in the care and protection of children and obligation of the state to help them in carrying out those duties have been dealt with mainly based on the convention of 1989 and the constitution of India. 112 pp.

Secondly the friends kins and neighbours influence such adoption. The influence by institutional sources is still marginal. Further the behaviour of tribal farmers in adoption of technology is not much different from that of non tribals. The study also indicates that the farmer in small category has responded well like the large ones because their economic status has allowed them to test the new technologies. The study also shows that higher number in packages is higher the rate of adoption. It can be argued that as the number in the packages increases the cost of the packages escalates. Therefore the marginal farmers allege against the costly practice. 105 pp.

The Manipur (hill areas) District Councils Act 1971. Bibliography. Index. One of the basic policies of the Government of India is to give a special priority to promote and protect the distinctive identity of the tribal people. The idea of autonomy and self government are the main themes under this policy. With this basic objective the Government of India through the constitution of the country provides district level autonomy for tribal people. This is known as the VI Schedule of the Constitution. However most of the common people particularly of Manipur are not able to have a detailed information about the nature of the working of the district council in the tribal area. So sometime a sense of confusion was developed in their attempt to understand the working system. This monograph is the first of its kind of study on the functioning of district council. In this work author analysed very critically about the nature of the functioning of the system of the autonomy in the district council of tribal inhabited area. Indeed it is a good exercise to bring awareness among the common people in general of the character of autonomy at district level. The publication of this monograph itself is also a big contribution to those research scholars who are intending to do further research work in this area. 96 pp.

Appendix the Names of the indigenous religions and cultural organizations of the North East India. Bibliography. Index. The anthropologists and the Christian missionaries have written on the religious beliefs and practices of the indigenous tribal people with bias and prejudice. Prof. Gangmumei Kamei's essays on primordial religion exposed the fallacy and inaccuracy of Tylor's animism. He discusses Dr. Harnold Turner's proposal of primal religion to define the tribal religious belief. However Prof. Gangmumei Kamei opines that the term primordial religion which means existing since the beginning of time is a more accurate definition of tribal religion which is an ancient and eternal belief. Prof. Kamei also thinks that the Sanskrit term Sanatan Dharma meaning ancient and eternal religion expresses the tenets of tribal religion. The other three essays deal with the indigenous belief of Maori people of New Zealand Zulus of South Africa the Cherokees of North America and Sankyo of Korea. There is another essay on Tribal Religious Reform Movement of Northeast India the Seng Khasi Movement of Meghalaya the Zeliangrong Religion revivalism of Northeastern India and Donyi Polo of Arunachal Pradesh. Prof. Kamei devotes an essay on the Zeliangrong religion as a case study of primordial religion. The work of Prof. Kamei is a brief but a thought provoking exposition on philosophy of tribal religion which will be of interest to anybody who is interested in tribal study. 88 pp.
